Baseball swept in weekend series against Lincoln

Lincoln, Pa. (Apr. 15, 2024)- The Virginia State University baseball team was swept in a pair of double headers on both Saturday and Sunday against Lincoln University. 

SATURDAY GAMES 

GAME 1 VSU 4 LUP 17 

  • Jimmyll Williams started the game with a single. TJ McGowan then hit a one out single to get runners on the corners. Jaquan Tucker then hit a sacrifice fly to get Williams home 

  • However, in the bottom of the first the Lions scored three runs. Then in the second neither team would get a hit 

  • Lincoln would add another five runs in the bottom of the third and six runs in the bottom of the fourth to get an 11-1 advantage 

  • In the fifth Matthew May would be hit by the pitch and then Williams hit a double to right field to score May, but the Lions would add another three runs in their half of the fifth inning 

  • The Trojans would score a run in both the sixth and seventh innings 

  • Williams would be the only player for VSU with multiple hits 

GAME 2 VSU 9 LUP 13 

  • In the second inning Jaron Ward would get a one out walk, stole second and then got to third after an error by the catcher. Dawsyn Hock would then single to left to score Ward. After a May walked Daniel Smith hit a single to score Hock 

  • However the Lions would put up nine runs in their half of the second inning 

  • The pitchers would lock down the hitters until the bottom of the fifth when the Lions added another run making it double digits  

  • Then in sixth inning McGowan started with a triple and Jamari Pooler brought him in with a single. Ward would walk again and after back-to-back wild pitches Pooler would score and Ward would be on second base. Ward would then score on a wild pitch as well 

  • Williams would add another 2 RBI's to his total with a single that scored May and Justus Crawley who both walked 

  • The Lions would add another three runs in the bottom of the sixth 

  • In the seventh Pooler hit a homerun and Ward would score an unearned run but the Trojans would drop the game 13-9 

SUNDAY GAMES 

GAME 1 VSU 2 LUP 6 

  • Williams opened the game with a homerun and Pooler would follow with his own solo shot one batter later 

  • The Lions would answer with their own two-run homerun that was part of a four run first inning 

  • Lincoln would hit another homerun in the third, another two-run shot, to make it 6-2 

  • The Trojans only collected three hits after the first inning with McGowan the only player with more than one hit 

GAME 2 VSU 4 LUP 11 

  • The Lions would score three runs in the bottom of the second after getting runners on second and third in the first inning 

  • In the third inning the Trojans answered with three runs of their own. Bryce Wilmoth reached on an error and managed to get to second. Avante Banks then singled to get runners on the corners. Williams then singled to right with Banks getting to third. Christian Henderson hit an RBI groundout and Pooler an RBI single to tie the game 

  • The Lions retook the lead in their half of the third 

  • Pooler would collect another RBI single in the fifth, but the Lions would add two runs in the bottom of the inning and then five runs in the bottom of the sixth 

VSU's record is now 11-23 and will play Barton College tomorrow on April 16 at 3 pm.
