Orangeburg, N.Y. (March 9, 2024)- The Virginia State University men's lacrosse team traveled to Dominican University and came up just short in a 14-10 decision. Jaiden Harris would score his first two collegiate goals with Andre Bigham adding a season high five goal performance.
After Dominican University scored the first two goals, Harris and Donovan Elmore scored two within four minutes of each other to end the first quarter at a 2-2 tie. Then to begin the second quarter Bigham and Harris scored again to double VSU goal count to make it 4-2. However, the Chargers would score twice within 20 seconds (3:10-2:51) to retie the game, that would start a five-goal swing for Dominican to make the halftime score 7-4.
Dominican controlled the third quarter by staying most of the opening 11 minutes in their offensive end, scoring three goals on 12 total shots while holding the Trojans to only two goals both by Bigham with one being assisted by Kalani Laughlin. Laughlin scored just 33 seconds into the fourth quarter and Elijah Bryant also scored to answer a Chargers goal to make the score 11-8 with 10 minutes left in the game. Bigham would score another two goals to help the Trojans reach the double-digit mark with 10 goals, but Dominican would add another to have a three-goal lead with 13 with just 4:17 left. The Chargers would deliver the dagger with 1:28 left to win the game 14-10.
Jace Wiggins would end with a new career high of 29 saves. As a team the Trojans went 22-30 on clears. The Trojans now drop to 1-4 and the Chargers pick up their first win of the season (1-3). Davis & Elkins will be the next opponent for VSU as they return home on Wednesday March 13 at 1 pm.
