Elizabeth City, N.C. (March 27, 2024)- Playing in the final day of the CIAA Round up the Virginia State University softball team earned a pair of nin run victories; 10-1 over Livingstone and 9-0 over Shaw
GAME 1 VSU 10 LIVINGSTONE 1

In the top of the inning the Blue Bears went down in order and the Trojans managed to get Hailey Darrington to second after a walk and stolen base but couldn't get her across

Livingstone managed to load the bases in the second, but Jaya Diggs-Hagwood managed to work herself out of the jam. In the bottom half Shamya Hankins and Skye Corum hit back-to-back singles. Two batters later Maisie Spivey hit an RBI fielder's choice

LC managed to get that run back in the third, but the Trojans answered with a two-out rally with Diggs-Hagwood and Mylia Knight hitting singles which set up runners on the corners. Knight than stole second which allowed Diggs-Hagwood to score which was followed by a Hankins double down the left field line making it 3-1

The Trojans added two more runs in the fifth after a triple down the right field line by Knight which plated Diggs-Hagwood and Alaijah Pratt. Then Hankins singled to score Knight and Corum would walk. Reina Washington then doubled past third base to score yet another run and Spivey the hit an RBI groundout to help VSU put up 5 runs

In the sixth inning Darrington single, followed by a bunt single by Pratt and Diggs-Hagwood reaching on a fielder's choice to load the bases with zero outs. Hankins would reach on bases via an error which would score two runs to end the game

Diggs-Hagwood pitched all six innings allowing five hits, one earned run and three strikeouts

Hankins finished with three hits while both Darrington and Washington would collect two hits apeice
GAME 2 VSU 9 SHAW 0

Darrington walked to start the game and would later advance to third on a bunt single by Pratt, who also managed to swipe second base. Darrington would come around to score on an error by the catcher after a Diggs-Hagwood walk

Knight would also draw a walk to load the bases for Haniks however a passed ball let Pratt come across to score and the next pitch Hankins shot a double to left field to make it 4-0 with still no one out. Hankins came around on a wild pitch after a Corum walked

Corum managed to get all the way to third after two passed balls with just one out and after a pitching change Corum came around to score on, yet another passed ball. Siann Meadows walked, and Serenity Barbee singled to get yet another Trojan into scoring position

Both runners got into scoring position after the fifth passed ball of the inning. Darrington then reached on a second Shaw error to allow Meadows to score and on the very next pitch Darrington stole second

After all was said in done VSU put up seven runs in the bottom of the first inning

Kara Green sat down the Bears in order in the second with a strikeout and two groundouts to short stop

Neither team managed to get a run in the second and in the third the Trojans added another two runs after a two-out RBI single by Diggs-Hagwood to make the score 9-0

Shaw managed to get a player in scoring position in the fourth inning after back-to-back single, but they were unable to send her across the plate

The Trojans managed to get on via an error but were unable to capitalize on the opportunity in the fourth

Green came out in the fifth inning and put Shaw down 1-2-3 with a fly out and two ground outs to win the game

Green picked up her second win of the Round-up and help VSU end the Round-up 6-0

Six different players recorded a hit for the Trojans with Knight and Hankins having a multi-RBI game
With the two wins VSU now improves to 11-2 and 6-0 in conference play. The team will return home to take on Bowie State Friday April 5 for a double header at 12 pm.
