Softball continue strong showing at CIAA Round up

Elizabeth City, N.C. (March 26, 2024)- Playing on day two of the CIAA softball round up Virginia State picked up where they left off yesterday winning game one, 10-7 over Winston Salem State and winning game two 5-0 to Claflin. 

GAME 1 VSU 10 WSSU 7 

  • VSU went down in order in the top of the first. The Rams were able to take advantage of two walks, two hit by pitches and three passed balls to get the first run across  

  • In the top of the second Mylia Knight walked and Skye Corum hit a one out single before Nia Hall grounded out to get both runners in scoring position. Reina Washington cashed in with a triple to right field to score both Knight and Corum 

  • WSSU would retake the lead in their half of the second inning after loading the bases and scoring after an HBP and then a three-run fly out to center field to be up 5-2 

  • The Rams added another run in the bottom of the third and fourth innings 

  • In the fifth inning Serenity Barbee and Hailey Darrington both reached base before Jaya Diggs-Hagwood doubled to cut the deficit to 7-4 

  • Then in the top of the seventh Darrington and Alaijah Pratt both walked and advanced on a pass ball. Diggs-Hagwood then walked to load the bases. Knight then doubled to clear the bases and tie the game. Corum then hit a three-run home run two batters later. 

  • WSSU would get runners on second and third, but Pratt would strike out the final two batters to record her first save of the season with Corum picking up the win 

  • Washington, Knight and Darrington all recorded two hits 

Game 2 VSU 5 CLAFLIN 0 

  • Kara Green got the start and pitched a complete game only allowing six hits 

  • In the bottom of the first Darrington advanced to second after getting on via an error by the pitcher, Pratt then had a bunt single to get runners on the corners with no one out. Knight would hit a one out single to get VSU on the board. Then in the second inning Maisie Spivey and Siann Meadows both walked before Darrington singled to load the bases. All three moved up a base after a pass ball making it 2-0  

  • Pratt and Knight would hit a two out RBI single in the bottom of the fourth and in the sixth Knight would hit another RBI single to add an insurance run 

  • Knight would go 3-4 with three RBI's and Darrington and Pratt both would add two hits 

  • This is the first win against Claflin since they joined the CIAA 

They will return tomorrow for the final day of the Round up against Livingstone and Shaw at 12:30 and 3:00 pm respectfully.
