Trojans explode for 33 runs on day one of the CIAA Round up

Elizabeth City, N.C. (March 25, 2024)- The Virginia State University softball team played in the first day of the CIAA Round-up and would put on an offensive showing winning game one, 22-7 over Johnson C. Smith and game two, 11-3 over Fayetteville State. 

GAME 1 VSU 22 JCSU 7 

  • It didn't take long for the Trojans to put the runs up. Hailey Darrington singled then stole second, Alaijah Pratt then reached via an error and Darrington would score 

  • Jaya Diggs-Hagwood then singled to plate another, back-to-back singles loaded the bases and three straight singles for Skye Corum, Nia Hall, and Maisie Spivey plated three more runs 

  • Makailah Harmon than tripled to clear the bases making it 8-0 with the top of the lineup coming back up. Darrington hit her second single of the inning to plate Harmon. Diggs-Hagwood singled to gather another RBI and Pratt would score an unearned run after Shamya Hankins reached on an error by the shortstop. Corum hit an RBI ground out and Hall would hit a RBI double to finally end the scoring in the first inning at 13-0 

  • The Trojans would tack on two more runs in the top of the second and top of the fourth all while Pratt limited the Golden Bulls to three hits and two runs with one being unearned 

  • In the bottom of the fourth however JCSU managed to gather some offensive momentum as they added four runs, but VSU got those four runs back in the top half of the fifth  

  • Seven different players had multi-hit games with Spivey going a perfect 4-4 with an RBI and scoring two runs. Darrington also went 4-4 with five runs and two RBI's 

  • Pratt picked up her third win of the season gathering three strikeouts 

GAME 2 VSU 11 FSU 3 

  • Darrington started the game off with a single to center followed by a single to third by Pratt. Two batters later Mylia Knight would hit the Trojans first home run of the season to put up a 3 spot in the first inning 

  • The Broncos would get a hit in the bottom of the first, but she wouldn't get pass first base and for the next two innings both teams would get players in scoring position but couldn't cash in 

  • In the Trojans half of the fourth Corum walked to start the frame off followed by a double to left by Hall. Serenity Barbee would single to plate the two runners. Barbee would steal second then advance to third after a two out single by Pratt. Diggs-Hagwood was then walked to load the bases. Knight would continue her hot day as she singled past second to gather two more RBI's with VSU ending the inning up 7-0 

  • Fayetteville State would be sat down in order in the bottom half of the frame by Diggs-Hagwood. In the fifth, three straight one-out singles by Hall, Reina Washington and Barbee loaded the basses for Darrington. Darrington would hit into an RBI fielder's choice. 

  • Diggs-Hagwood helped herself  by hitting a 3-RBI double to center to have VSU hit the double-digit mark at 11-0 

  • The Broncos would add a three-run homerun in the bottom of the fifth but it was too little to late 

  • Diggs-Hagwood picked up her first win of the season while only giving up five hits and three runs 

The Trojans move to 7-2 overall and 2-0 in CIAA play and will play tomorrow against Winston-Salem State and Claflin University at 11:00 AM and 4:00 PM respectfully.
