Ettrick, Va. (March 12, 2024)- The Virginia State University baseball team took on D'Youville University and dropped a nine-inning game 5-1.
The Saints went to work early as they hit a single and then advanced to second on a pass ball. The next two batters would ground out to score the batter and make D'Youville on the board early. In the bottom of the first after the first two batters struck out, Thomas Moore was hit by the pitch followed by back-to-back singles by Christian Henderson and Dawsyn Hock to knot the score at one.
The Saints once again got a player on third after he singled then stole second and advanced to third on an error by the shortstop. The runner on third would then come around to score on a groundout to the first basemen. The Trojans were unable to answer, but also kept D'Youville off the board until the top of the fifth when the leadoff bater bunted for a single then stole second and third. The very next batter would single up the middle to score the runner. After advancing to second on a wild pitch a sac bunt brought the runner to third. A sac fly would then make it 4-1 in favor of the Saints.
In the Trojans side of the sixth, seventh and eighth innings VSU would go down in order while the Saints would add one more to make it 5-1. TJ McGowan would be the only Trojan player with multiple hits (2-2). On the mound Joseph Hastings went seven innings and striking out six. The teams will play tomorrow at 1 pm.
