Bowie, Md (Feb. 7, 2024)- The Virginia State University Women's basketball team made up their game against Bowie State on Wednesday afternoon and emerged victorious 70-60.
In the first six minutes of the game VSU gathered an eight-point lead, 15-7 after a Mihjae Hayes layup. The Trojans would hold a four-point advantage after Tiyanna James made a pair of foul shots to make it 19-15. In the second quarter a Trinity Moody three pointer finally gave Virginia State a double figure lead 31-19. The three pointer was a part of a 17-5 run that ran until the end of the quarter to put VSU up by 17 points, 41-27 at halftime.
With 7:22 remaining in the third VSU hit a 21-point lead, 47-26 after a Raija Todd three pointer. When all was said and done the Trojans ended the third stanza up 60-42. However, the fourth quarter was controlled by Bowie State. The Bulldogs outscored the Trojans 18-10 but it was too little too late as the Trojans managed to hold on for the 70-60 victory.
In her first start of the year for VSU Tanayja London had 15 points and six rebounds. Hayes also contributed a game high 16 points. The Trojans made good use of their bench scoring 30 of their 70 points. Next for the team will be a three-game road trip beginning at Lincoln University at 4 pm on Saturday February 10.
