2/3/2024 (Ettrick, VA)-The red-hot Virginia State's women's basketball team (17-3, 8-3) faced off against Elizabeth City State Vikings (14-8, 6-6) at home where they got cooled down by the Vikings in a game where the Trojans could never quite pull it together on either end of the floor.
Alexis Blake starts the game off with a steal leading to a lay-up by Tiyanna James putting the first points on the board for the Trojans. Elizabeth City goes on a 5-0 run to take the one-point lead and pretty much doesn't look back after that ECSU owned the lead for the entirety of the 1st quarter. An 11-0 by the Vikings to start the 2nd makes it a 32-15 game. Amesha Miller stops the bleeding with a made layup and a good free throw. Trojans tighten the screws on defense to close the 1st half but still had work to do going into halftime down 16.
Its more of the same for the Vikings to start the 2nd half as they made their first two baskets pushing their lead to 21 points. Alexis Blake cut the lead to 14 as she went on her own personal five-point run. But ECSU answers back with a layup and a made three by NyAsia Blango that sucked the air out of the arena. The Trojans dug in on defense again going on a 6-0 run and ending the 3rd quarter down by 12 in a 52-40 game.
A three by Tanayja London makes it a nine-point game. A costly turnover by Mihjae Hayes leads to another 6-0 run by the Vikings pushing the lead back up to 15. A nice fourth quarter push by the Trojans is not going to be enough to stop the Vikings. Final score 72-52. Trojans next play Regent University on Wednesday at 5p.m.
