VSU dominates Bowie State

ETTRICK, VA (2/21/2024)-Your Virginia State men's basketball (13-13) team went up against Bowie State University (10-15) for their second meeting of the season where they were able to grab momentum in the 2nd half and beat Bowie State 66-58.

Chris Hampton started the game off with a steal and an assist to Jonathan Norfleet for a made layup. The Trojans were rolling offensively Tremere Brown had an early 10 points with nine minutes left to play in the 1st half. A pair of free throws by Dajour Rucker put the Trojans up by 10, making it a 24-14 game. The Trojans ended the quarter on a layup that just beat the buzzer by Jared Clawson, they headed into the 2nd half with a 10-point lead.

Daryl Mackey Jr. scored the first points of the 2nd half for the Trojans. A 6-0 run by Bowie State cut the Trojan's lead in half. Chris Hampton got illegally screened which caused some chirping between the two teams. The Trojans responded. Hampton came out of the timeout to knock down a mid range jumper. Brown's and-1 chance got the crowd involved. He didn't knock down the free throw, but he did redeem himself on the other end with a dunk. The Trojans began to pour it on after the hard foul woke the team up. They went a 9-0 run and bumped the lead up to 13 before BSU's coach decided to call a timeout to stop the bleeding. Free throws by Tyrek Williams swelled the lead to 15. Chris Hill knocked down his own set of free throws then stole the inbound pass on the very next play. That heads up play put the Trojans up by 19. Coach empties his bench with a little over three minutes left to play. The Trojans would win putting them back in the win column. The men's basketball team next faces Virginia Union University on Saturday February 24th at 3:30pm.
