Ettrick, Va. (Feb. 17, 2024)- Playing in the first ever game between two HBCU programs Virginia State University won 12-8 over UDC.
VSU opened the game with goals by Kalani Laughlin and Devray Kirkland II to give them a 2-0 lead halfway through the quarter. UDC would score two goals in the first, but they were answered by Laughlin and Andre Brigham. In the second quarter Bigham would score back-to-back goals to give VSU a 6-2 advantage. However, the Firebirds would then score four straight goals to tie the game just three minutes into the third quarter. Donovan Elmore would score twice in less than a minute to give Virginia State a two-goal lead. Those were answered by two goals by UDC to tie the game at 8 going into the final stanza. Laughlin then completed another four goal fourth quarter to help prevail VSU to a 12-8 win.
In total Laughlin found the back of the net six times. Jace Wiggins finished with eight saves and earned his first collegiate win. The team will welcome Chowan into Rogers Stadium on Wednesday February 28 at 5 pm.
