Bluefield W. Va. (Feb. 14, 2024)- The Virginia State University women's basketball team (19-4, 10-4) put up a season low in points against Bluefield State (12-10, 6-7) as they drop a 64-49 decision.
The Trojans doubled Bluefield State early with Mihjae Hayes producing four points helping VSU lead, 8-4 four minutes into the game. The Big Blue would answer with a 13-9 run to end the first stanza at a 17-17 tie. Bluefield State would hit three straight three pointers in the final two minutes of the quarter.
The Big Blue would regain the lead at 21-19 after hitting a pair of free throws and a floater while VSU only had an Alexis Blake layup four minutes into the second quarter. Hayes would hit the Trojans first three of the half with 4:01 left in the half to tie the game at 26 and giving her 12 points already. Neither team could get much going in the final three minutes of the second quarter as the halftime score would be 28-28.
Neither team could find the momentum to begin the half as four minutes in the score was Bluefield State 33 Virginia State 31, with VSU only getting a Tiyanna James three in that span. The Big Blue would go on a 144-0 run after the James three to get the first double digit lead of the game for either team at 42-31. VSU would go into the final 10 minutes down 11 points 44-33.
The Big Blue would hold on to an eight-to-ten-point advantage after VSU scored the first four points in the fourth quarter with the score being 49-41 with 5:49 left in the game. A three-point play from James made it a 55-49 game with just 2:16 remaining.
Miller had a team high 14 points and Hayes also contributed double figures with 12.
The team end their road trip on Saturday February 17 against Elizabeth City State University at 2 pm.
