Chowan Edges Virginia State in High-Scoring Overtime Thriller
Ettrick, VA—The Virginia State Men's Basketball team hosted the Hawks of Chowan University on Wednesday, November 13, at 6 p.m.Â
Clint Wright Jr. got the Trojans started with a mid-range jumper putting VSU on the board first. Chowan went on a 5-0 run causing VSU to call their first timeout.
Clint Wright Jr. immediately responded by draining a three right out of the timeout. The first subs came in at the 15:44 mark of the first half to try to elevate the Trojan's energy. It was 15-9 until the 14:03 mark when
Jaedan Jefferson got an easy layup out of the post. After
Kendall Bynum is assessed with a technical foul he came back on the other end charging hard to the basket and was rewarded with two free throws knocking them both down. Bynum went on his own personal 4-0 run shrinking the lead to just two points.
Jayson Harris ties the game at 18 a piece with a fast break layup.
Clint Wright Jr. scores again on a three-point make putting the Trojans up 3 with 9:37 left to play in the half.
Jacob Cooper got fouled on a runner to the basket and completed the and-1. Chowan's Daylan Askew stops a Trojan 12-0 run with a made 3-point shot. A missed free throw attempt by Chowan's Daylan Askew keeps the Trojan's deficit at 1 point. A fast break throwdown by

Jacob Cooper drained a jumper at the buzzer and Virginia State would trail 40-39 going into the second half.

Chowan starts the second half on a 7-0 run.
Jacob Cooper stopped that run with a reverse scoop. Another mini 4-0 run by the Hawks forces VSU to call a timeout down ten. Kendall Bynam snapped the lead to just five with a 3-point make. A made 3-pointer from RJ Wilson put Chowan up 12 with 9:03 to go. Missed opportunities at the line by the Trojans help Chowan start to run away with their lead. The lead was 14 with 5 minutes to play in the game. Just when it looked like they were out of it Virginia State turned on the defense getting crucial stops and cutting the lead to just two with 35 seconds left in the game. Â

Joseph Owens started the overtime period hitting a layup putting the Trojans up by two. Back and forth they go in overtime. Cooper gets VSU within one point on a pair of free throws. Chowan's Eric Gordon comes right back down to drain a three and put the Hawks back up by four. A putback by Aaron Ross extends the lead to five. Despite a valiant effort Virginia State would fall to Chowan final score Trojans 91 Chowan 96.
