VSU sweeps Claflin; drop five setter to Winston Salem State

Winston-Salem, N.C. (Oct. 6, 2024)- In day 2 of the CIAA Roundup the Virginia State University volleyball team swept Claflin before dropping a match 3-2 to the host Winston-Salem State Rams.

GAME 1 VSU 3 CLA 0

  • VSU started the game on an 11-3 run with five points coming from Panthers attacking errors

  • Claflin and Virginia State would then go back and forth but it was too big of a deficit that the Trojans won set one 25-13 with the winning kill coming from Morgan Green

  • In set 2 Claflin took a 7-5 lead before VSU scored six of the next seven points, however Claflin would then score the next four points to retake the lead 12-11

  • The teams would continue to play back and forth with the score being tied at 25. Two errors from the Panthers and a kill from Helena Eubanks won the set for VSU 28-26

  • The third set was once again tightly contested with the score being 10-9 in favor of the Panthers. Claflin would score three quick points to make it 13-9

  • VSU would fight back to regain the lead at 19-18 after a kill from Gracie Darville

  • Virginia State would score the last six points of the match to win 25-19

  • Darville led the team with 11 kills followed closely behind by Green with nine

GAME 2 VSU 2 WSSU 3

  • WSSU totally controlled the first set winning 25-12 while VSU controlled the second set winning 25-14

  • In the third set the Trojans came out hot early having a 12-4 lead, with half of the points coming from Rams errors

  • The Rams managed to make it a four-point game at 20-16, but Darville would deliver the set winning kill at 25-21

  • In set four each team would answer a run with a run of their own to not allow either to gain much separation until Winston-Salem State had a four-point advantage at 18-14. WSSU managed to hold on to the four point lead until an attack error by the Trojans won them the set 25-20

  • In the fifth and final set WSSU would go up 6-3 early. While VSU would score the next two the Rams would score three straight to make it 9-5

  • WSSU would get to 12 points, but VSU would use kills from Eubanks and Darville to tie the game at 12

  • However, WSSU would score three straight to win the match

VSU is now 5-5 overall and 3-1 in the CIAA. The team will next play at Elizabeth City State on Monday October 14 at 6 p.m.
