VSU hands Shaw first conference loss since 2022: sweep day 2 of CIAA Roundup

Ettrick, Va (Oct. 27, 2024)- After sweeping Lincoln University 3-0 to open the day the Virginia State volleyball team defeated Shaw 3-2 to hand the Bears their first regular season conference loss since 2022. 

Game 1 VSU 3 LUPA 0 

  • VSU won the first set 25-9 and never let Lincoln score back-to-back points 

  • VSU won set two 25-14 and set three 25-23 

GAME 2 VSU 3 SHAW 2 

  • The Trojans and Bears played a back and forth first set which saw the Trojans win 26-24 

  • Kills from Morgan Green and Darville had the final two kills in set one 

  • Set two also was close as the score was tied at 17. Both teams would go on five-point runs making it 22 all 

  • Then a service error and back-to-back kills from Darville won the set 25-22 

  • Set three was totally controlled by Shaw winning it 25-17 

  • The Trojans score the first five points in the fourth set and 10 of the first 13 

  • Shaw would go on a 14-3 run to retake the lead 20-15. VSU would fight back and tie the game at 21 all, but Shaw would take set four 28-26. 

  • In the fifth set VSU would score 8 quick points making it 8-2 

  • Both teams would score two in a row then the Trojans ended on a 5-1 run with kills from Eubanks capping off the victory 15-6 

  • Kellee Craig had a team high 28 digs and added three service aces 

VSU is now 9-7 overall and 7-3 in conference play and beat Shaw for the first time under Head Coach Amanda Walker. The team will travel to Bluefield State on to round out October before welcoming the Big Blue on Saturday November 2
