Ettrick, Va (Jan. 24, 2024)- After only leading by one point in the final 24 seconds the Virginia State University women's basketball team (16-2, 7-2) made six straight foul shots to win 61-54 over Bluefield State University (10-4, 4-5).
After the first quarter was up VSU held a 16-9 advantage over the Big Blue. After three minutes into the second period the Trojans went on a mini seven to nothing run to make it 23-9. However, BSU answered with seven unanswered points to retake the momentum with four minutes left till halftime. The teams continued to play back and forth to make the halftime score 31-21 with VSU holding the advantage.
The Big Blue opened the third stanza on an 8-1 run cutting their deficit to three points 32-29. However, over the last five minutes of the quarter, the Trojans scored 13 of the last 20 points, going into the final 10 minutes up 45-36. Amesha Miller hit a jumper twenty seconds into the fourth to give VSU a double-digit lead at 47-36. Kamani Jones hit a layup with five minutes left in the game to make the score 55-44. Then two and a half minutes went by without a single basket, but the Big Blue went on a 10-0 run to make the score 55-54.
Miller scored 13 points and Mihjae Hayes produced 12 points as they were the only two Trojans in double figures. Next will be Lincoln University as they come to the MPC on Saturday January 27 for St. Paul's Day at 2 p.m.
