Athens, W. Va.- The Virginia State University volleyball team finished its weekend trip to West Virginia with a four-set loss to the Concord Mountain Lions 17-25, 25-23, 18-25, 20-25.
The first set was tightly contested with neither team gaining a lead of more than three points. VSU opened with a quick 3-1 lead with kills by Helena Eubanks and Alexis McNair. However, concord answered with a 7-3 run to secure an 8-6 lead. Another kill by McNair and an attack error by CU made the score 13-12, in favor of Concord. VSU couldn't cut the deficit down and would find themselves down 20-16 late. Then the Mountain Lions would end the first set with a 5-1 run to win set 1.
In set two Virginia State started out hot opening with a 5-0 run in part to two attack errors, two kills by Eubanks and a service ace by Kennedy Hoge. After Concord answered with their own 5-0 run VSU went on a 5-1 run to lead 10-6. During the run De'Mya Robinson and Eubanks each recorded a kill and a Peyton Resse service ace. After a 13-13 tie the Trojans retook the lead with four straight point with a kill by McNair, Hoge, an attack error and a service ace by Aaliyah Bethea. With the lead in hand VSU maintained a three- or four-point lead to win the second set 25-23.
The third set started in a 3-3 tie until the Mountain Lions broke off a 15-7 run to gain control with an 18-10 lead. After Kelsey Saulny and an attack error ended the run the Trojans found themselves down by six, but CU kept their foot on the peddle winning the third set 25-18. The fourth set saw both teams battle back and forth with Concord holding a 13-10 lead. Then three straight kills by Eubanks, Taniyah Epps and Hoge tied the game back up for Virginia State. Cu answered with a 4-0 run and VSU could never cut the lead down and would end up dropping the fourth set 25-20.
Resse had a game high of 34 assists, while both Eubanks and Hoge had double digit kills 13 and 12 respectfully. Hoge also registered 12 digs giving her a double-double her second this season.
The Trojans return home to face off against Washington Adventist University on Thursday September 22 at 6 p.m.
