VSU Golf Concludes the PGA Works Collegiate Championship in Birmingham, AL

Birmingham, AL – The Virginia State Men's Golf team spent the past week at the PGA WORKS Collegiate Championship, presented by Chase Sapphire at the Shoal Creek Club & Brent Brook Golf Course in Birmingham, Alabama.

The Trojans had practice rounds and participated in several professional development and team bonding experiences throughout their stay in Birmingham before getting to business on the course for the three-day main event from May 8-10.

The team outings included Top Golf, the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, and the PGA's Beyond the Green Forum. The forum is a career exploration and networking event that invites high school and college students from historically underrepresented backgrounds to discover the opportunities available to them within the $102 billion golf industry, along with the chance to hear from local business leaders.

The PGA Works Collegiate Championship is regarded as the most culturally significant championship in collegiate golf, annually hosting student-athletes enrolled in HBCUs, Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs), and other Minority-Serving Educational Institutions (MSIs).

The PGA WORKS Collegiate Championship was created in 1986 to highlight competitive golf programs at the most underserved and underrepresented MSIs across the country, in addition to educating and inspiring student-athletes to pursue career opportunities.

In their final event of the 2022-23 season, the Trojans finished seventh in the 54-hole championship. Leading the way was Juan Ruiz Patino, who finished 18th (78-84-76—238, 24-over par) in the 41-player field. Tylen Wallace (82-86-77—245, +31) was the next Trojan up to place within the top 30, tied for 29th. Additionally, Wallace led the team with seven birdies over the course of the tournament.
