VSU Women’s Basketball Are Set to Host the Shaw Bears on Wednesday, Feb. 8

ETTRICK, VA- The Virginia State University women's basketball team are set to host the Shaw University Bears on Wednesday, February 8.  The CIAA matchup is set for 5:30pm at the VSU Multipurpose Center.

Series History
The VSU Trojans are 9-13 against the Shaw Lady Bears in the series. The teams met this season on January 18, where VSU fell short of the win with a final road score of 54-43.

The Trojans are 9-13 on the season, 5-7 in the CIAA, under the leadership of VSU's 1st year head coach Nadine Domond. On February 6, VSU secured a close 66-64 home win over the Lincoln University Lady Lions. The squad currently shoots 35.8% from the field and is averaging 58.8 points per contest. They are ranked first in the conference in opponent free throw percentage knocking down 69.5% of their shots from the foul line. They look to improve from behind the arc as they shoot just 103-of-390 (26.4%) from the three-point line.

Defensively, they average 10 steals per game while forcing 20.8 turnovers per contest.

Sommer Blakemore leads the team with 14.2 points per game; shooting 37.8% from the field, and averaging 3.3 free throws and 3.7 assists per game. Kalyn Ervin steps in with 2.5 steals per game, while Kylah Webb leads the Trojans in rebounds, averaging 5.5 boards per game.

Scouting the Shaw Bears
Shaw U is 12-12 on the season, 5-7 in the CIAA after a February 4 win over Bowie State University. The Bears are averaging 59.3 points per game while allowing 57.9. Collectively, they are shooting 37.8% from the field, 27.5% from three-point range and 66.3% from the foul line. Shaw averages 40.2 rebounds and 11 assists per game. They also are averaging 20.7 turnovers per game while allowing opponents to score 17.3 points off turnovers. They have averaged 10.3 steals and 2.8 blocks on the season. Makenzie Pollard leads the Bears in scoring, averaging 11.7 points, while Brittany Seymour controls their boards with 8 rebounds per game. Rita James controls Shaw's assists with 3 per game.
