Ettrick, Va. (Nov. 11, 2023)- The Virginia State University men's basketball team gathered their first victory in the early season with an 82-62 victory over West Chester University.
Over the first 10 minutes both defenses were making their presence felt with the score being 16-7 in favor of VSU. While the Trojans shoot about 43 percent (6-14) on their limited opportunities, they held WCU to only 25 percent (3-12) shooting from the floor.
Over the next five minutes however the CSU offense came alive scoring 12 points compared to West Chesters for. Of those 12 points, five different Trojans would record a field goal to help make it a 28-13 game. Six of the 12 points came from three pointers courtesy of Kamryn Edwards and Jared Clawson.
The Trojan defense held the Rams to only seven total points on only one field goal, over the last five minutes and three seconds of the game while seeing the margin of their lead increase getting as high as 20 points, 36-16, just one minute before halftime. Edwards would supply four more points during the final segment of the half. Just before the buzzer Clawson was fouled on a last second heave and was able to go to the foul line where he sank all three to give VSU a 41-20 lead.
Coming into the second half the Trojans got five quick points from Edwards withing the first two minutes. Kendall Bynum, Dajour Rucker and Tremere Brown added field goals within the first five minutes to make it 55-30. The Trojans would never let their foot off the gas as they would see their lead get as big as 26 points on multiple occasions. Izaeah Parker would hit the final field goal for the Trojans on a thunderous dunk at the 3-minute mark.
Edwards finished the game with 19 points, Imhotep George finished with 12 points and seven rebounds. VSU hits the road for three straight with the first game being November 19 against Lander University at 3:30 p.m.
