Elizabeth City, N.C.- The Virginia State University volleyball team went to Elizabeth City State University for the second CIAA Round-up. In their four games they ended up winning two games.
Game 1 VSU 3 JCSU 0

After finding themselves down 6-3, VSU would score six unanswered points, four of those points came off Golden Bulls errors

After Johnson City retook the lead at 14-13, Jennah Kareem started a 12-3 run with a kill. Kenedy Hoge and Peyton Resse would also obtain kills during the run. Leyla Conley would get the kill that would win the set for VSU 25-17

In the second set Virginia State would jump out to the early 5-2 lead, Johnson City would then retake the lead and wouldn't relinquish it until the Trojans tied the set at 18 due to a bad set.

While tying the game it was part of a quick 4-0 run and Amaya Cooper would end the set with a kill to win the 25-23

The third set was a back-and-forth affair with each team going on mini runs. The Golden Bulls would go on a 5-1 run to retake the lead 19-17.

However, with a kill by Cooper that started a 6-1 run for the Trojans to get only two points away from winning not only the set but the match

VSU would win the set, 25-23 with a service error and would start the CIAA Round-up with a win

In the first two sets Virginia State would start both sets close, but Shaw would eventually pull away and win set one 25-14 and set two 25-13

Set three was closer for the Trojans, but still saw them get down 13-4 early in the set

However, VSU would answer with a 6-0 run, with five points coming from the Lady Bears

Shaw would be the first team to get to 20 points as they went on an 8-3 run to make the score 21-13

VSU would go on its second 6-0 run to get back within two points, but it would be too little too late as Shaw would prove victorious 25-21

VSU opened the first set on a 7-1 run which included two kills from Kennedy Hoge and one from Resse

After WSSU made it a one-point game, 10-9, two kills by Reese made it 14-10 after a mini run for the Trojans

The teams would then go back and forth for the remainder of the first set with VSU coming out on top 25-23

The second set would see neither side take a huge advantage until it was tied at 15 all. After that WSSU would go on a 7-2 run to take a 22-17 lead

Conley would end the run with a kill and the next point would also belong to Virginia State, but the Rams would end up on top in the set 25-21

The third set was also tightly played as the largest lead in the set would belong to VSU at 14-10, and a kill by Hoge would win the set for the Trojans 25-23

WSSU would take an early 7-5 lead in the fourth set before two errors, a service ace from Leila Jackson and a kill by Hoge shifted momentum to the Trojans at 9-7

However, the Rams would seem to rattle off two to three points at a time while only limiting VSU to one point at a time to eventually win the set 25-20

In the fifth set WSSU would get to the eight-point mark first leading by two points. After switching side VSU would tie the game back up with two errors from the Rams

Winston Salem would then answer with a 5-1 run and would gain the momentum and win the match with a set 5 win 15-12
Game 4 VSU 3 Livingstone 0

Virginia State was in total control in the first set winning 25-9

They opened the set on a 17-5 run which included kills from five different players

The second set was more tightly contested as it was tied at seven all early

Neither team could gain much separation when LC was up 15-14 until VSU started a 6-1 run which started with a kill from Conley

The Trojans would end the set scoring four of the last five points with a kill by Hog the winning point at 25-22

In set three Virginia State jumped out to an early 7-4 lead with kills from three different Trojans

However, the Blue Bears would mount a comeback and make the third set tough challenge as each team wouldn't give an ounce as neither team could hold more than a one-point lead

Late in the set VSU would be up 21-20 after the Blue Bears scored due to an attack error. VSU would score the last four points from three straight attack errors and a service ace from Reese
With the two wins Virginia State now sits at 7-11 and 6-4 in conference play. The team will travel back home to play on Thursday October 19th taking on Elizabeth City State University at 6 p.m.
