Women’s soccer falters to Big Blue

Bluefield, W. Va.- The Virginia State University women's soccer team traveled to Bluefield State and dropped the contest 4-2

It didn't take long for Bluefield State to get on the board as they scored just one minute and 18 seconds into the match. VSU didn't get their first shot off until Gabrielle Franklin had an attempt that was saved by the Big Blue goalkeeper.

Bluefield almost added a second goal as they were awarded a free kick from just outside the penalty box, but the ball sailed just above the goal. In the 24th minute Danica Carter had a one-on-one with the goalkeeper, but she just missed her shot to the left of the post.

Bluefield would add another goal in the 29th minute as an attacker was able to run down the right side of the field and squibbed a kick past the goalkeeper Maya Cajchun, to make it 2-0. Morgan Parris would add one back as VSU would be rewarded with a penalty kick just two minutes later, after a hand ball in the box and she would beat the goalkeeper to make it a 2-1 deficit.

In the second half Bluefield State managed to get off two shots in the 54th and 55th minutes when both happened to miss the left post. VSU managed to tie the game as Franklin was able to receive a pass from Parris and fake out the goalkeeper and get behind her for an easy goal making it 2 all.

After the Big Blue would continue to put the pressure on as they fired off three shots that went high and two that were saved by Cajchun, but in 74th minute BSU would finally find the back of the net to regain the lead 3-2. Bluefield State would deliver the dagger as the attacker split a double team and shot the ball into the bottom right to win the match 4-2.

With the loss VSU moves to 2-8-2 and with the win Bluefield State now improves to 4-8. The team stays on the road as they take on Barton College on Wednesday October 18 with kickoff scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
