VSU Women’s Basketball Are 2-2 in CIAA Play After Falling to WSSU, 64-53

Box Score ETTRICK, VA (January 5, 2023)- The VSU women's basketball team move to a 6-7 overall record, 2-2 in the CIAA, after a conference loss to the Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) Rams on Thursday evening. Despite falling short of a win, 64-53, VSU's Sommer Blakemore control the game in scoring with 22 points.

First Half
Taking the home court advantage, the first half ruled in favor of the Trojans. They got off to a face-pace and energetic start thanks to the Trojans finding openings on the floor for buckets, rebounds and steals. Although VSU held the lead, WSSU was not too far behind ending the first quarter, 16-14. The visiting Rams seemed to gain a rhythm in the second quarter as the Trojans worked to extend the scoring gap. After seeing 4 ties in the second quarter, the Trojans entered the locker room at halftime with the score tied 27-all.

Second Half
The roles reversed in the third quarter as the Trojan experience a temporary loss of momentum, allowing the Rams to go on a scoring spree. At the end of the quarter, VSU trailed 48-35. The Trojans battled in the fourth quarter to bounce back, but the effort was not enough to regain the lead. VSU fell short of the win against WSSU with a final score of 64-53. 

Leaders
The VSU Trojans were led by Sommer Blakemore who led the game with 22 points and 4 steals. Kalyn Ervin was equally matched with 4 steals of her own to accompany her 15 points. Controlling the boards for the Trojans was Kylah Webb with 8 rebounds.

Up Next
The Trojans will return to action on Sunday, January 8 to take on the Lady Blue Bears of Livingstone College. The CIAA matchup is set for 2:00pm.
