BOWIE, MD (January 28, 2023)- The VSU women's basketball team move to an 8-13 overall record, 4-7 in the CIAA, after falling to the Bowie State University Lady Bulldogs, 59-47, on Saturday afternoon.
First Half
Despite Bowie State going on a 5-0 run to open the contest,
Kamani Jones got the Trojans on the board with a layup. Rajia Todd followed up with a shot from behind the arc to tie the score, 5-all. VSU battled to control the court, as
Sommer Blakemore gave the team their first lead of the game with a 3-pointer, bring the score to 8-7. The first quarter saw several lead changes, but the Trojans held on to their lead at the end of 10 minutes, with a score of 15-14.
The opening of the second quarter mimicked the first as the Lady Bulldogs went on a run (9-0). VSU worked to regain control, but were unable to take the lead. With only scoring 7 points in the quarter, the Trojans entered the locker room at halftime with a trailing score of 31-22.
Second Half
The 3
rd and 4
th quarters ruled in favor of the home team (Bowie State), as VSU worked to close the scoring gap. With a score of 40-30 at the end of the 3
rd quarter and a final score of 59-47 at the end of the 4
th quarter, the Trojans suffered a CIAA Northern Division loss.
Leaders
VSU's scoring was led by
Shayla Sweeney with 15 points, followed by
Sommer Blakemore with 14 points. Controlling the boards for the Trojans was
Kamani Jones with 6 rebounds, while
Kalyn Ervin was in the right place at the right time with 2 assists and 2 blocks for VSU.
Up Next
The Trojans return home to face Regent University on Wednesday, February 1 for National Girls and Women in Sports Day. The non-conference matchup is set for 7:30pm at the VSU Multipurpose Center.
