VSU Women’s Basketball Falls to Bluefield State, 71-56, In Non-Conference Matchup

BLUEFIELD, WV (January 23, 2023)- The VSU women's basketball team moves to an 8-11 overall record, after a 71-56 non-conference loss to the Bluefield State University Big Blues on Monday evening. Despite the loss, VSU's Sommer Blakemore led the game in scoring with 15 points.

First Half
After an extensive scoring run by the Bluefield State Big Blues, Trinity Moody gave the Trojans their first 5 points of the game. The 1st quarter ending in favor of the Blues, 15-7.
The Trojans worked to find a rhythm in the 2nd quarter as the home team extended the scoring gap. At the end of the first half, VSU entered the locker room with a trailing score of 34-22.

Second Half
The 3rd and 4th quarter mimicked the first half as the Trojans battled to get into a grove to control the game.  Despite the continuous battle, VSU was not able to control the court with a 3rd quarter score of 52-33 and a final score of 71-56.  

Leaders
Leading the game in scoring was Sommer Blakemore with 15 points to accompany her 7 rebounds. Kalyn Ervin led the contest with 6 steals, alongside her 12 points.

Up Next
The Trojans will travel to Lincoln, PA on Thursday, January 26 to take on the Lady Lions of Lincoln University. The CIAA northern division matchup is set for 5:30pm.
