VSU Women’s Basketball Falls Short to ECSU, 60-47

Box Score ETTRICK, VA (January 21, 2023)- The VSU women's basketball team move to an 8-10 overall record, 4-5 in the CIAA, after a 60-47 conference loss to the Elizabeth City State University Lady Vikings Saturday afternoon.

First Half
The scoring action for the Trojans was slow to start in the opening minutes of the first quarter. Boogie Robinson put VSU on the board with a free throw at 6:55. Finding their rhythm, the Raija Todd found an opening for a layup. Despite the Lady Vikings attempt to pull ahead, Kalyn Ervin and Sommer Blakemore grasped back-to-back 3point shots. Ervin gave the Trojans their first lead of the game with a layup, bring the score to 13-11. ECSU soon went on the 13-0 run to end the first quarter with a 24-13.

VSU battled to get on the board to start the 2nd quarter. Kamani Jones added a point for the Trojans with a free throw at 8:35 left until halftime. Ervin delivered another shot from behind the arc to help close the scoring gap. Todd and Blakemore tag teamed with consecutive 3-points in favor of the Trojans. Entering the locker-room at halftime, the score ruled in favor of the visiting Lady Vikings, 34-27.

Second Half
The Trojans had a change of speed and energy in the to start the second half. Boogie Robinson got the 3rd quarter started for VSU with a shot from behind the arc. At the first media timeout of the second half, the score was 43-32, in favor of the vising Lady Vikings. Battling to close the scoring gap, the third quarter ended with a score of 48-33. Despite the continuous battle, VSU was not able to regain control in the 4th quarter, ultimately ending the game with a 60-47 loss.

Leaders
The VSU Trojans were led by Kalyn Ervin with 14 points and 2 steals. Controlling the boards for the Trojans was Boogie Robinson with 5 rebounds, while Sommer Blakemore stepped in to help, leading the team with 2 assists.

Up Next
The Trojans will travel to Bluefield, WV on Monday, January 23 to take on the Blues of Bluefield State University. The non-conference matchup is set for 5:30pm.
