Box Score RALEIGH, NC (January 18, 2023)- The VSU women's basketball team move to an 8-9 overall record, 4-4 in the CIAA, after a conference loss to the Shaw Bears on Wednesday evening.
First Half
The game got off to a slow with a lot of action and no scoring results on either side of the court. Although Shaw made the first basket of the contest,
Raija Todd broke the scoring drought for the Trojans with a floater. The Bears would soon jump ahead going on a 6-0 run.
Kalyn Ervin kicked VSU's game into high gear, with consecutive 3-pointers to bring the Trojans within one point of a tied score. Before rounding out the 1
st quarter, a free throw by
Trinity Moody tied the game 10-all.
The Trojans entered the 2
nd quarter with a 5-0 run, featuring key plays by Moody,
Kamani Jones and Boogie Robinson. Despite Shaw's attempt to take the lead by tying the score 20-all, the Trojans prevailed with a halftime lead of 26-20.
Second Half
The 3
rd quarter was action-packed as the fight for the lead continued. Although game saw several tied scores, there was also a stint of almost 4 minutes of scoreless action. The quarter ended in favor of the Bears, 37-33.
Despite the continuous battle, VSU was not able to regain control in the 4
th quarter, ultimately ending the game with a 54-43 loss.
Leaders
The VSU Trojans were led by
Kalyn Ervin with 10 points and 3 steals. Controlling the boards for the Trojans was
Kamani Jones with 7 rebounds to accompany her 3 steals.
Sommer Blakemore stepped in to help, leading the team with 2 assists.
Up Next
The Trojans will return to action on Saturday, January 21 to take on the Lady Vikings of Elizabeth City State University for St. Paul's College Day. The CIAA matchup is set for 3:00pm at the VSU Multipurpose Center.
