ETTRICK, VA- The Virginia State University women's basketball team will host the Lady Panthers for the 2023 Freedom Classic Festival on Jan. 14. The contest is set for 12:00pm at the VSU Multipurpose Center.

Series History
The VSU Trojans are 12-15 against the VUU Lady Panthers in the series. The teams met last season, where the VSU fell short of a road win with a final score of 61-54.

The Trojans are 7-8 on the season, 3-3 in the CIAA, under the leadership of VSU's 1^st year head coach Nadine Domond. On Jan 10, VSU took a 70-54 loss to the Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith University. The squad currently shoots 35% from the field and is averaging 61 points per contest. They have moved up and are now ranked second in the conference in free throw percentage knocking down 72% of their shots from the foul line and are second in the conference with a turnover margin of 3.4. They look to improve from behind the arc as they shoot just 69-of-273 (25%) from the three-point line.

Defensively, VSU is third in the conference in defense points per game (58.1). The Trojans are second in the CIAA in opponent three-point percentage forcing opponents the field and 23.4% from beyond the arc against them. They average 9.9 steals per game while forcing 21 turnovers per contest. 

Sommer Blakemore leads the team with 15.3 points per game; shooting 38.4% from the field, and averages 4.1 free throws, 2.6 steals and 3.5 assists per game. Kylah Webb leads the Trojans in rebounds, averaging 5.7 boards per game.


Scouting the VUU Lady Panthers
VUU is 8-7 on the season, 2-3 in the CIAA after a Jan. 11 loss against St. Augustine's University. The Lady Panthers are averaging 63 points per game while allowing 62. Collectively, they are shooting 36% from the field, 28% from three-point range and 70% from the foul line. VUU averages 42 rebounds and 11 assists per game. They also are averaging 17 turnovers per game while allowing opponents to score 15 points off turnovers. They have averaged 6 steals and 4 blocks on the season. Ny Langley leads the Lady Panthers averaging 17 points, 11.1 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game.
