Trojan Volleyball Heads Back to West Virginia For UC Invitational

ETTRICK, VA – The Trojans are coming off a rough 1-3 weekend after hosting the VSU Volleyball Classic. The squad will have to shake it off quickly as they prepare to hit the road to West Virginia once again this season. The VSU Volleyball team is scheduled to play part in the UC Invitational hosted by University of Charleston. They're scheduled to play four games during the weekend with two coming on Friday, September 9 against Belmont Abbey College at 9:30am and Bloomsburg University at 3:00pm. The final two games are on Saturday, September 10 against Salem University at 9:30am and University of Charleston at 3:00pm. This will be the final tune up for the team as they prepare for conference play the following week.

Last Time Out

This past weekend the Trojans hosted their annual VSU Home Opener Volleyball Classic. They played four matches which came against Elizabeth City State University, West Virginia State University, Shippensburg University, and Chowan University ending with a weekend record of 1-3 with the lone victory coming in style sweeping Chowan 3-0. Freshman Amaya Cooper led the Trojans yet again in kills for the weekend with 28. Helena Eubanks was only one kill shy of Cooper with 27 total kills while Najlaa Williams led the defense with an astonishing 43 total digs. Taniyah Epps did her work at the net as she led in total blocks with 12. Makenzy Johnson led the setters with 55 assists over the weekend while Jennah Kareem ended with seven aces. Kareem earned six aces against Shippensburg which is the most any player in the conference has had in a single game up to this point in the season.

Series History

The Trojans are 0-2 all-time against Belmont Abbey College. This weekends matchups against Bloomsburg and UC will be the first ever meetings with the two teams. The Trojans are however 1-0 all-time versus Salem.

Trojans Leaders

Amaya Cooper leads the Trojans offense with a team-high 55 kills this season while Helena Eubanks comes in second with 53 total kills. Makenzy Johnson leads the team in assists with 113 while her counterpart accounts for 96. Najlaa Williams leads the defense for the Trojans with a team-high and third ranked total in the CIAA 102 digs while Cooper also leads the team in blocks with 18. The team has has a three way tie for service aces as Makenzy Johnson, Jennah Kareem and Leyla Conley each have 10.

Scouting Belmont Abbey

The Crusaders will be coming into the weekend with a 0-8 overall record. Mia Samaha leads the team offensively with a team-high 40 kills while Ella Schellenberg has a team-high in assists with 96. On defense, Zoe Schuberth has a team-high 70 digs and Baylea Botello leads the team in blocks with eight.

Scouting Bloomsburg

The Huskies currently maintain a record of 1-6 so far this season. Warfel Shayna leads their offense with a team-high 46 kills while Aydan Espinal leads the team in assists with 121. Defensively, Maura Uschock has a team-high 90 digs while is Emily Jackson leads with 18 blocks .

Scouting Salem

The Tigers are coming into the weekend with a 0-11 record with three of the losses coming at home, one loss coming away, and the other seven losses coming at a neutral site.

Scouting Charleston

The Golden Eagles are coming into the weekend looking to bounce back having lost their last two matches now standing tall at 6-2. They are 3-0 while away and 3-2 at neutral sites.
