Trojans Bounce Back Strong with a 3-0 Sweep Over Claflin

The win makes the Trojans 4-1 in conference play

BOWIE, MD --The Virginia State Volleyball team (9-8) earned yet another conference sweep to end their participation in the first CIAA Volleyball Roundup. They move to 4-1 in conference play after defeating Claflin 3-0 (25-18, 25-19, 26-24).

 
Game Notes
  • Leyla Conley had a standout performance as the freshman earned a career-high 11 kills along with a match-high four blocks.
  • Makenzy Johnson and Najlaa Williams earned service aces.
  • Emma Quarles led both teams with 19 assists while Makenzy Johnson ended with 15.
  • Makayla Berry earned a personal best 17 digs in the sweep while Najlaa Williams ended with 16 digs.
  • VSU earned the advantage in kills 42-27
  • VSU posted their best hitting percentage of the season with a .197.

 
How It Happened
SET 1 | The two teams came out swinging as back-to-back kills from Helena Eubanks made the score 5-5. As Claflin earned the slight edge 7-10, VSU scored eight of the next nine points to take a 15-11 lead. The Trojans started to attempt to pull away after Zaria Irons landed two straight kills to make the score 20-13. The Lady Panthers would fight but the Trojans fought harder to close the set out at 25-18.

SET 2 | Much like set one, set two started neck-and-neck with the score at 6-6. The Trojans struggled to find breathing room but back-to-back kills from Amaya Cooper made the score 16-10. As the Lady Panthers pulled to as close as three points Amaya Cooper scored the set winning point with a powerful kill to end the set at 25-19.

SET 3 | Following the trend, the two teams battled to start the set but this time the Lady Panthers would attempt to pull away scoring three straight points to go up 5-7. Alexis McNair and Helena Eubanks would team up to help the Trojans tie the set at 9-9. The lady Panthers went on a 6-1 run to push their lead all the way out to 12-18. Claflin grew their lead all the way to 15-21 until the Trojans came roaring back going on an 11-2 run. VSU faced five set points but successfully completed the comeback winning 26-24.

 
What's Next
The Trojans will be right back inside the VSU Multipurpose center for a huge conference matchup against Shaw who is currently undefeated in conference play. The marquee matchup is slated for Thursday, September 29 starting at 6:00 p.m.
