VSU Volleyball Ecstatic to Host VSU Volleyball Classic to Open Home Slate

ETTRICK, VA  – The VSU Trojans Volleyball team prepares to shake off their rough start this past weekend as they return home to host the VSU Volleyball Classic. The Trojans have four matches to play as the first two are on Friday, September 2 against Elizabeth City State University and West Virginia State University while the next two matches are on Saturday, September 3 against Shippensburg University and Chowan University.

Last Time Out

The Trojans participated in the Davis & Elkins Top Hat Classic this past weekend and played four matches against Seton Hill University, Davis & Elkins College, Lock Haven University, and Glenville State College, ending with an overall record of 1-3 for the weekend. Freshman Amaya Cooper led the Trojans in total kills for the weekend with 27 while Najlaa Williams led the Trojans the Trojans defensively with a superb weekend as well leading the team in total digs with 59 which allowed to be recognized as the CIAA Defensive Player of the Week.

Series History

The Trojans are 18-1 all-time versus Elizabeth City State and 1-0 all-time against West Virginia State. They are also 0-1 all-time against Shippensburg and 5-11 all-time against Chowan.

Trojans Leaders

Through the first four matches of the season, the Trojans are offensively led by freshman phenom Amaya Cooper who leads the team with 27 kills. Veteran leader Makenzy Johnson leads the team so far with six aces and 59 assists. The Trojans are defensively led by the reigning CIAA Defensive Player of the Week, Najlaa Williams, who has a team-high 59 digs for the season. Amaya Cooper also leads the team in blocks with seven.

Scouting Elizabeth City State

ECSU is coming in with a record of 2-2 so far this season. They are offensively led by reigning CIAA Rookie of the Year, Jada Rouse who leads the team in kills with 51. Last week's performance granted her CIAA Offensive Player of the Week. Elizabeth Kellum leads ECSU in assists with 67. Defensively, the squad is led by Clarke Blakemore who has a team-high in blocks with 15 while Elizabeth Kellum also leads their team in digs with 62. Maci Keys was named CIAA Rookie of the Week after ending the Top Hat Classic with 19 kills, 12 digs and 10 blocks.

Scouting West Virginia State

WVSU enters the VSU Volleyball Classic with a record of 2-1. The Yellow Jackets are offensively led by Diamond'Nique Young who has a team-high 48 kills while Brooke Smith leads the team in assists with 71. The squad is defensively led by Diamond'Nique Young who leads the team in blocks with 13 while Alex Darby who has a team-high in digs with 63.

Scouting Shippensburg

Shippensburg has an overall record 1-3 this season. Offensively, the Raiders are led by Jordan Bowen who has a team-high in kills with 28 while Kearstin Davis has a team-high 62 assists. The squad is defensively led by Rachel Verhoef who is leading the team in blocks with 19 while Alex Leitner has a team-high in digs with 40.

Up Next

The Trojans are set to hit the road once again as they will prepare participate in the UC Invitational against Belmont Abbey College and Bloomsburg University on Friday, September 9 starting at 9:30 a.m. The squad will regroup to face Salem University and the University of Charleston on Saturday, September 10 also starting at 9:30am.
