Trojans Earns First Non-Conference and Road Win Against Lock Haven

ELKINS, WV --The Virginia State Volleyball team (1-2) earned their first road and non-conference win Saturday afternoon against Lock Haven winning three straight sets after dropping the first (19-25, 25-21, 25-17, 25-18) at Davis & Elkins University's Top Hat Classic in Elkins, WV.

Former All-CIAA Rookie Helena Eubanks found her footing in the win with a season-high nine kills in the win. Amaya Cooper also added eight kills while veteran Zaria Irons contributed seven. While Makenzy Johnson assisted on 17 points, she also added three aces along with Leyla Conley. Senior Setter Emma Quarles assisted on a season-high 20 points. Najlaa Williams also earned a season-high 16 digs while Jennah Kareem had 10.
 
Game Notes
  • Amaya Cooper earned eight kills for the second game in a row.
  • Helena Eubanks earned a personal and season-high nine kills.
  • Makenzy Johnson was a heavy contributor boasting 17 assists with three aces.
  • Najlaa Williams was as terror defensively accounting for 16 digs.
  • The Trojans out earned LHU 43-37 in kills.
  • The Trojans posted their best hitting percentage of the season hitting at a .148% clip.
  • VSU earned a season-high 12 aces as a team.
 
 
How It Happened
SET 1 | The two teams traded points until the score came to 7 all. Following the 7 all tie, LHU would score three straight points to go up 10-7. Thanks to a big kill from Helena Eubanks and a service ace from Najlaa Williams, the Trojans were able to battle back to bring the score to 11-10. LHU would push their lead out to 18-13. Thanks to mistakes from LHU and two key kills from Helena Eubanks, Alexis McNair and Kelsea Saulny, the Trojans were able to bring the score to 19-18 in favor of LHU. Feeling the pressure, LHU scored six of seven points to end the set 25-19.  

SET 2 | Much like the first set, the second saw a tie at 8 before LHU scored four of five points to bring the score to 12-9. VSU scored four points straight to take a one point lead 16-15. While LHU was able to tie the game at 20, the Trojans scored five of the last six points of the set led by back-to-back kills from Helena Eubanks. The Trojans took the set 25-21.

SET 3 | The Trojans allowed their momentum from set two to carry over after jumping out to a 7-2 early lead. VSU won five of the last six points to bring the score to 14-7. The Trojans would continue to put on an offensive clinic throughout the remainder of the set 25-17.

SET 4 | The Trojans once again came out red hot taking a commanding 9-2 lead headlined by three kills from Jennah Kareem and a pair from Amaya Cooper. LHU was able to put some points together to cut the deficit to four points. This inspired the Trojans to score five straight points thanks to back-to-back aces from Makenzy Johnson to bring the score to 18-8. The momentum shifted back towards LHU as they scored seven points in a row to make the score 18-15. The Trojans would make key plays down the stretch to take the set 25-18 and ultimately the match.


What's Next
Virginia State will get some rest before attempting to go undefeated on today against Glenville State at 5:00 p.m. today to conclude their participation in Top Hat Classic.
