Trojans Anticipate Strong Showing in the Davis & Elkins Season Opening Invitational

ETTRICK, VA (August 25, 2022) – The Virginia State University Trojans are set to start their season off with a bang on the road in Elkins, West Virginia as they prepare to compete in the Davis & Elkins Season Opening Roundup. The Trojans will face Seton Hill University, the hosts Davis & Elkins College, Lock Haven University, and Glenville State College during their two-day trip in West Virginia.
 
 
 
Match Details
The Trojans will look to earn a pair of wins to kick off the 2022 season against the Seton Hill Griffins and the Davis & Elkins Senators on Friday, August 26 with the first game against Seton Hill starting at 3:00pm and the second game against Davis & Elkins starting at 7:00pm. On Saturday, August 27, the squad will wrap up the season opening invitational with another double header starting with the first game against the Lock Haven Lady Eagles starting at 3:00pm and the second game against the Glenville State Pioneers starting at 5:00pm.
 
 
 
Series History
The Trojans are 0-1 in the all-time series against Seton Hill, Davis & Elkins College, and Lock Haven University. On the flip side, the Trojans lead the all-time series against Glenville State 1-0.
 
 
 
Trojans Returning Leaders
The Trojans went 15-10 overall and 13-3 in conference play last season, and they were offensively led by Helena Eubanks who had a team-high 228 total kills which ranked her 7th overall in the CIAA and she had 172 in conference kills which ranked her 5th in the conference while Makenzy Johnson accumulated a team-high 395 assists. Kennedy Hoge gave defenders trouble with her serve after leading the team with 30 service aces. On the defensive side, Virginia State was led by Najlaa Williams who led the team with 242 total digs which ranked her 8th throughout the CIAA, and she had 188 in conference digs which ranked 6th overall in the conference while Zaria Irons had the most blocks amongst returning players on the team with 44.
 
 
 
Scouting Seton Hill
Seton Hill went 12-15 last season, and they were led by Paige Cole who led the team with 279 kills and Riley Rock who led the team with 365 assists. They were defensively led by Carrie Leazer with 476 digs and Bobbi Rempe who led the team with 66 blocks.
 
 
 
Scouting Davis & Elkins
Davis & Elkins went 14-13 last season, and they were offensively led by Macie Magallon who led the team with 442 kills and Brilane Manchego who led the team with 909 assists. Defensively they were led by Mariah Autobee who had a team high 366 digs and Brianne Portley who had a team high 53 blocks.
 
 
 
Scouting Lock Haven
Lock Haven's record last year was 4-20. They were offensively led by Gabriela Fialova who had a team high 230 kills and Kelly Gaston who had a team high 642 assists. They were defensively led by Regan Happ who had a team high 398 digs and Meghan Tennant and Alyssa Daley who were tied for the team lead in blocks with 31 a piece.
 
 
 
Scouting Glenville State
Glenville State went 3-19 last season, and they were offensively led by Skylar Mace who had a team high 170 kills and Julia King who had a team high 308 assists. They were defensively led by Hannah McKown who had a team high 144 digs and Skylar Mace who had a team high 37 blocks.

The Trojans return home to host the VSU Volleyball Classic against Elizabeth City State University and West Virginia State University on September 2, 2022 starting at 11:00am and Shippensburg University and Chowan University on September 3, 2022 with that day starting at 1:00pm.
