ETTRICK, VA - Virginia State showed grit and tenacity in claiming the inaugural New South Athletic Conference baseball championship Wednesday night in a misty and windy Elizabeth City, North Carolina. The Trojans went 4-1 in the double-elimination tournament and played a record setting four games in one day to claim the NSAC Inaugural Title.
Â
The Trojans would open tournament play taking down Thomas Nelson Community College 5-4 on the first day. After being forced into the loser's bracket by top-seed Newport News Apprentice School 18-6, the Trojans took all of their frustration out against MACU dismantling the Mustangs 20-2 to advance to the championship game.
Â
Newport News Apprentice School only needed one win to take home the championship, but the Trojans, behind a stellar complete-game victory by first team all-conference selection,
Tahraun Hammond, forced a winner-take-all nightcap after taking the first game 6-1. With temperatures gradually getting lower as the mist and wind picked up, VSU would not falter and ended the baseball marathon with a 9-6 win to take home the Inaugural New South Athletic Conference title.
