Trojans Take One of Two Against Lady Vikings

ETTRICK, VA  – The Trojans split with Elizabeth City State in their first divisional doubleheader of the season. ECSU took down the Trojans in a pitchers dual 3-2 in game one but the VSU came back out in the second game and won 8-6.


Game 1
After having just two hits between the two teams in the first inning, the Lady Vikings scored the first run of the game on a single. The next at-bat, ECSU doubled into right field to score another run. The Trojans were able to stop the bleeding early to hold the score at 2-0 in the bottom of the second inning. With two outs in the bottom of the third inning, Alani Horton doubled into right center field to score Alaijah Pratt from first base. The next at-bat saw Nia Hall reach on an error made by the shortstop to knot the game at two. The Trojans were close to having a runner on third base in the top of the sixth inning but was thrown out on a throw from right field to third base. The bottom of the sixth inning saw the Lady Vikings take the lead on a homerun into dead center field to make the score 3-2. On their final chance to tie or go-ahead, Julia Jones and Serenity Barbee singled to put runners on first and second base with one out. The runners would stay put unfortunately as the next two batters hit into outs to end the game at 3-2.

Game 2
After a scoreless first inning, Leah Harrison was able to beat out an infield single to score Desmyn Owens to give VSU to lead 1-0 in the top of the second inning. The Trojans exploded in the top of the third inning as Macy Beville started the squad off with a bomb deep into left center field that scored Alaijah Pratt from first base. After Desmyn Owens tripled down the right field line, Samantha Cunningham drove her in on a single into center field. Julia Jones then came up and doubled into right field to score Cunningham from first base. Jones would later come around to score on a double into the left center field gap. Alaijah Pratt would help the Trojans add to their lead on a single to score Leah Harrison. Heading into the bottom of the third inning, the Trojans led 7-0. ECSU would start their comeback process in the bottom of the third inning scoring on a throw to second base as VSU attempted to catch the Lady Vikings stealing. ECSU would add to their lead on an error made by the first base player to cut the VSU lead down to 7-2. In the top of the fourth inning, the Trojans added a run as Samantha Cunningham doubled in left field to score Desmyn Owens to make the score 8-2. In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Lady Vikings made a push for the lead after scoring on a single to the pitcher. The next at-bat, they scored on a double into the right center field gap. The Lady Vikings then scored on another double into right center field. The inning ended with ECSU scoring on a ground out to third base. The Lady Vikings would cut the lead to just two runs with the score at 8-6. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Desmyn Owens made a miraculous diving catch as one of the Lady Vikings tried to lay down a bunt. After making the catch, she made a throw from her knees to first base for a double play to end the inning. After forcing ECSU to ground out three times, the Trojans took the victory in game two 8-6.
