Trojans to Get Back on Track Against Davis and Elkins

ETTRICK, VA  – Virginia State University will be back at Whaley Colbert field to redeem themselves after a humbling performance against the Lincoln (Pa.) Lions. The Trojans blew a five run lead to lose the first game in the doubleheader against the Lions 6-7 and dropped the second matchup 4-9. The Trojans will look to get back on track against Davis and Elkins as they prepare for a 4-game weekend series Senators.

Ricky Jones leads the team at the plate, as he was able to put a jolt into the baseball twice in game two of the CAU series. Jones leads the squad in home runs (2), Batting Average (.464), tied for first in runs (9), RBI (8) as well as hits (13) and at-bats (28). The freshman Tahruan Hammond has collected 12 hits in just 26 at-bats, as he is second on the team in batting average (.462) and hits (12) while leading the team in walks (8). As the Trojans currently have three players that maintain a batting average of .300 or better, the team hits on astounding .311 from the plate with an on-base percentage of .452. The pitching rotation is off to a strong start despite their outing against Lincoln (Pa.) as they allow just a 3.18 earned runs per contest. Nicholas Woolfolk and Grayson "Cole" Spain are proven to be a two-headed monster on the mound as Woolfolk leads the team in innings pitched while maintaining a ridiculous 2.70 ERA in 20 innings while Spain leads with 26 strikeouts which ranks him 14th in the country.  Against CAU, Woolfolk earned a career-high nine strikeouts. Avante Banks proves to be deadly on the infield with 33 put outs so far this season while also maintaining a .333 batting average, which ranks him third on the team. Jones is also a vacuum in the outfield as well with 16 put outs on the season. Tahraun Hammond and Christian Henderson lead the team with 10 assists each.
