Trojans Roll Over Bulldogs, 78-61

 ETTRICK, VA – The Virginia State men's basketball team balled out in their final home game of the season as they put the smack down on the Bulldogs, 78-61. The Trojans shot 44% from downtown while forcing the Bulldogs to shoot 32.7% from the field. The win bumps their conference record up to 6-9.

 
The Trojans had four players finish in double figures in Terrence Hunter-Whitfield (17),Fitzgerald (14), Michael Melvin (11) and Daryl Mackey, Jr. (10). Hunter-Whitfield went 6-of-10 from the field while ripping down a game-high down eight rebounds while also gaining a steal and a block. Fitzgerald also accounted for five rebounds, five assists and two steals with a block. Melvin accounted for seven assists and six rebounds. Mackey, Jr. grabbed four boards in the contest. The Trojans outrebounded the 31-27 and scored 17 points off turnovers.   

 

How It Happened
  • The Trojans started the game with a 5-1 lead after Daryl Mackey, Jr. hit a three-pointer to start the game. BSU was able to cut the lead to one-point with 18:30 left to go in the first half. The Trojans would extend their lead to double digits for the first time in the game with the score 18-8 with 12:16 left in the first half.
 
  • The Trojans would go on to extend their lead to 22-8 midway through the half. As the Bulldogs would continue to fight to cut the deficit to single digits, Hunter-Whitfield would knock down a three-pointer to push the lead to 27-14 with 7:01 left to go in the first half.
 
  • After converting an and-one play by Kylon Lewis, the Trojans went up 34-17. Dajour Rucker would go on to knock down a three-pointer to extend the Trojans lead to 20 points heading in to the locker room at halftime with the score at 40-20.
 
  • Coming out of the half, the Trojans were able to match the Bulldogs points keeping the lead to 20 with 15:55 left to go in the second half. The Bulldogs made a push for the lead scoring seven unanswered points to bring the score to 46-33. Due to contributions from Hunter-Whitfield and Fitzgerald, VSU took a commanding 56-37 with 11:26 left in the half.  
 
  • With 7:03 left to go, the Trojans were able to keep the Bulldogs at arm's length despite allowing BSU to cut the lead to just 14 points. Michael Melvin was able to give his squad a 21-point lead as he hit a three-pointer that made the score 71-50 with 5:27 left in the game.   
 
  • The Bulldogs attempted to cut the VSU lead to less than 10 points as they went on an 8-0 run to cut the lead to 71-58. The Trojans would go on to close the game out at 78-61.
