VSU Women’s Basketball Hosts Barton for a New Year’s Eve Matchup

ETTRICK, VA- The Virginia State University women's basketball team is prepared to host the Bulldogs of Barton College on New Year's Eve (December 31) at the VSU Multipurpose Center. The non-conference tip-off is set for 2:00pm.

Series History
This is first meeting between the VSU Trojans and BC Bulldogs women basketball teams!


Self-Scout
The Trojans are 5-6 on the season, 2-1 in the CIAA, under the leadership of VSU's 1st year head coach Nadine Domond. On Dec. 19, the Trojans defeated Claflin University on the road, 69-64. The squad currently shoots 35% from the field and is averaging 62 points per contest. They rank third in the conference in free throw percentage knocking down 72% of their shots from the foul line and are second in the conference with a turnover margin of 4.6. They look to improve from behind the arc as they shoot just 55-of-216 (25%) from the three-point line.

Defensively, VSU is second in the conference in defense points per game (56.3). The Trojans are leading in the CIAA in opponent three-point percentage forcing opponents the field and 21% from beyond the arc against them and are third in opponents field goal percentage (34%). They average 10.9 steals per game while forcing 22 turnovers per contest. 

Sommer Blakemore leads the team with 15.4 points per game; shooting 40% from the field, and averages 3.8 free throws, 2.8 steals and 23.3 assists per game. Kylah Webb leads the Trojans in rebounds, averaging 5.5 boards per game.


Scouting the Barton Bulldogs
Barton is 2-8 on the season after a Dec. 17 win over Converse University. The Bulldogs are averaging 60 points per game while allowing 65. They shoot 34% from the field, 29% from three-point range and 64% from the foul line. Barton 39 rebounds and 11 assists per game. They are averaging 15 turnovers per game while allowing opponents to score 15 points off turnovers. They have average 8 steals and 2 blocks on the season. Lauren Walker leads the Bulldogs averaging 14 points per game, while Cierra Revelle controls Barton's boards (5 per game) and Lauren Mingo leads in assists (3 per game).
