FAYETTEVILLE, NC – The Trojans Men's Basketball team ended two streaks with their win over the defending CIAA Champions in Fayetteville State, 65-54. The squad ended a four-game win streak the Broncos held over the Trojans and also ended the Broncos five-game season win streak they entered the matchup with. The Trojans shot a season-high 80% from the free throw line after going 16-of-20 from the charity stripe after drawing 19 fouls in the contest. The squad recorded five or more blocks for the fifth time this season as they swatted six shots in the contest. VSU did their damage in transition scoring 15 fast break points. Even though the Broncos outrebounded the Trojans 38-34, VSU forced 13 turnovers and accounted for five steals. The Trojans forced the Broncos to shoot just 33.3% from the field and 15% from beyond the arc. In the second half, the Broncos shot 31.4% from the field and 12.5% from the field. In the second half the, Trojans shot 54.5% from the field, 100% from beyond the arc and 85.7% from the free throw line. For the game, they shot 46% from the field but just 25% from the three-point line. Yet again, the Trojans dominated the paint outscoring the Broncos 34-28.
Terrence Hunter-Whitfield led the game with 18 points shooting 6-of-11 (54.5%) from the field while knocking down 2-of-5 (40%) of his shot from downtown. Hunter – Whitfield grabbed four rebounds and two steals in the win as well. This makes the 10
th game he has accounted for a steal in the game.
Francis "BJ" Fitzgerald scored 13 points and accounted for six rebounds the contest with three assists and two steals. Fitzgerald shot 5-of-12 (41.6%) from the field and knocked down 1-of-4 (25%) of his three-pointers.
Zach Newkirk led the game with four assists while scoring 12 points along with a pair of rebounds, a block and steal. Newkirk shot 4-of-9 (44%) from the field and 4-of-5 (80%) from the free throw line.
Tremere Brown racked up 10 points on 4-of-8 (50%) shooting from the field with four boards and a block.
Dajour Rucker,
Stephon Roberts and
James Love, III. scored four points apiece. Roberts also led the team with seven rebounds with a pair of rebounds while Love, III. accounted for a pair of blocks.
