MOUNT OLIVE, NC (December 10, 2022)- The VSU women's basketball team battled hard in their road matchup against the University of Mount Olive (UMO) Trojans on Saturday night. Despite falling short of a win, 59-58, VSU made it a close contest with second chance points (12-6); and dominated the game in bench points (20-12) and rebounds (37-35).
First Half
Taking the home court advantage, UMO moved ahead to control the opening 2 quarters. VSU began to find their groove in the second quarter as
Kalyn Ervin stepped up to close the scoring gap. Battling to get within 3 points of tying the score, the Trojans entered the locker room with a halftime score of 33-27.
Second Half
The 3
rd quarter ruled in favor of UMO as the expanded the lead, but VSU left their mark in the 4
th quarter with the help of
Sommer Blakemore offensively and Boogie Robinson defensively. The game came down to the wire as VSU took their first lead of the game with free throw by Robinson with 45 seconds left in the game. After a jumper by UMO, the final seconds of the contest would rule in favor of the home team.
Leaders
The VSU Trojans were led by
Kalyn Ervin, who shot 87.5 % from the free throw line, helping her secure 17 points. Ervin was also in the right place at the right time, collecting 6 steals over UMO.
Sommer Blakemore was not too far behind in scoring with 16 points, while leading VSU with 6 rebounds. Also securing boards for VSU was Boogie Robinson, with 6 rebounds of her own.

The Trojans will begin CIAA conference play for game 2 of their 4-game road tour. On December 15, the women will travel to Raleigh, NC to face the Falcons of St. Augustine's University. Tip off is set for 5:30pm
