ETTRICK, V.A. – Virginia State men's basketball notched their first win of the 2022-23 season against Millersville University late Friday night 72-63. The Trojans overcame a three-point half time deficit by outscoring Millersville 43-31 in the second half .
Terrence Hunter-Whitfield had a game-high 19 points, as he was one of three Trojans to finish in double figures as
Tremere Brown (16) and
Stephan Morris (11) had solid outings in their Trojan debuts.
Zach Newkirk nearly accounted for double-digit assists as he ended with a game-high nine assists, nine points and tied a game-high five rebounds.
Tremere Brown couldn't stay off the rim after ending with 16 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the field with three rebounds and multiple rim rocking dunks.
Stephan Morris was a technician in the post scoring 11 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field. Hunter-Whitfield earned a team-high three steals with four rebounds.
The shots were falling for the Trojans as they ended shooting 54 percent from the field. The Trojans shot 72 percent from the free throw line after going 7-of-7 in the second half. The Trojans won the rebound battle 31-23 while grabbing eight offensive rebounds. VSU's bench showed up and was ready to play as they outscored MU 26-9.
How It Happened
- The start of the game saw Millersville earn the early edge as an 8-0 run allowed them to take a 11-6 with 14:43 left in the first half.
- After scoring six points straight, Millersville was able to open their lead up to seven points. The Trojans would answer by going on their largest run of the game scoring eight points straight thanks to four points by Terrence Hunter-Whitfield to make the score 23-22 with 3:22 left to go in the first half.
- MU took a 32-29 lead into the half time break.
- To open the second half, the Trojans went on an 8-2 run to take the lead for the first time since the beginning of the game with the score at 37-34.
- The Trojans went on to top that with a 10-2 run led by a couple layups from Tremere Brown to make the score 47-39 with 13:25 left to go in the second.
- The Trojans got their lead up to as much as 13 points as Millersville scratched and clawed to cut the lead to under five but the Trojans were able to keep them at arm's length to earn them the win in their season opener 72-63.
