VSU Volleyball Ends Regular Season at .500 After 3-1 Victory Over Bowie State

Kelsea Saulny earned a pair of career high's in kills (8) and blocks (5) in final game of the regular season

BOWIE, MD – The VSU Volleyball team moves to 15-15 in the regular season after spoiling the senior night of Bowie State (25-21, 20-25, 25-13, 25-11)


Game Notes
  • Helena Eubanks led the match with a team-high 11 kills which marks her tenth double-digit kill match while Kennedy Hoge added eight.
  • Kelsea Saulny earned career-high's in kills with eight and blocks with five as she posted a miraculous .600 hitting percentage.
  • Both Zaria Irons and Alexis Baker ended the match with three service aces while Kennedy Hoge posted two.
  • Emma Quarles led the team with 18 assists while Makenzy Johnson was just two away with 16
  • Najlaa Williams earned 20 or more digs for the fourth time this season leading the match with 20.

 
How It Happened
SET 1 | After a back-and-fourth start to the match, the Bulldogs went ahead after scoring four points straight to go up 7-3. The set saw six more ties until the Trojans scored four points straight to go up 18-15 led by kills from Helena Eubanks and Amaya Cooper. As the Bulldogs cut the lead to two points, the Trojans scored three straight points to stretch their lead out to 22-17. Kennedy Hoge, Makenzy Johnson and Alexis McNair teamed up with kills to end the set at 25-21

SET 2 | Bowie State earned the early lead 8-4 out of the gate in the second set. After the Trojans fought back to bring the score 8-7, BSU went on a 4-0 run to make it 12-7. The Trojans scored six of eight points to bring the BSU lead to just one at 14-13. With the score at 19 all, BSU scored five straight to take set two 25-20.

SET 3 | The Trojans jumped out to an early 7-3 lead thanks to kills from Helena Eubanks and Kelsea Saulny. VSU was able to keep the Bulldogs at arm's length as they moved the score to 21-10 after going on a 5-1 run. The Trojans went on to close out the set 25-13 after scoring four of the last five points of the set.
 
SET 4 | With the score tied at five, Najlaa Williams earned back-to-back service aces which played a part in the 5-0 run of the Trojans to make the score 10-5. Later in the set, the Trojans got hot again scoring six of seven points to extend their lead to 20-10. The Trojans would go on to five points straight to end the set at 25-11.


What's Next
As the Trojans stand tall at third in the Northern Division of the CIAA, they await their Quarterfinals opponent. The CIAA playoffs start on Monday, October 7 at a time and location to be announced.
