VSU Volleyball Looks to Stay Hot in Divisional Play Facing Shaw

ETTRICK, VA – The Trojans are set to host Shaw in a marquee Northern Division matchup on Friday, October 21 at 6:00 p.m. This will be the first of two matchups between the divisional foes.

Last Time Out
The Trojans played another stellar match to start their week as they swept Virginia Union their last time out. Helena Eubanks had another great match as she finished with the team-high in 11 kills which was her seventh time this season she earned double-digit kills. Amaya Cooper also had a great match as she turned in a double-digit kill performance of her own with 10 with a .381 hitting percentage. Freshman Kelsea Saulny had a career day as she notched a career-high in kills with four, blocks with five and points scored with 6.5. Emma Quarles was the lone setter in the match for the Trojans as she did more than hold her own ending with a match-high 26 assists. Kennedy Hoge led the team in digs for the second straight match. The Trojans won the first two sets comfortably (25-19, 25-15) however, they got to a strong start in the third but lost the lead late yet still managed to get the lead back and take the third set 25-22.
 
 
Series History
The Trojans are 4-9 against the Bears since 2012 with the last match being a 3-0 loss to the lady Bears. They have lost their last nine matches against the Bears. The Trojans haven't beaten Shaw at home in matches going back to 2012.
 
 
 
Trojans Leaders
Helena Eubanks leads the offensive charge for the Trojans as she has a team-high 191 kills which ranks her fifth in the CIAA. Amaya Cooper with 170 kills and Alexis McNair with 116 kills are the other two Trojans who have eclipsed 100 kills for the season. Emma Quarles leads the Trojans in assists with 330 while Makenzy Johnson is not far behind with 311. The Trojans have four players who have eclipsed over 20 service aces this season as Najlaa Williams has 23, Kennedy Hoge has 25, Leyla Conley has 26 while Makenzy Johnson leads the way with the team- high 30 service aces which also ties her for third in the CIAA. Defensively, Williams is the Trojans top defender as she leads the Trojans with a team-high 344 digs with 4.00 digs per set and a .911 receiving percentage which ranks her first in the entire CIAA. Hoge is second on the team in digs with 168. Cooper leads the Trojans in blocks 46 which would place her fifth in blocks in the CIAA. As a team the Trojans are second in kills with 872 and second in digs with 1,153. The squad also ranks second in assists with 756 and second in blocks with 128.0.
 
 
Scouting the Opponent – Shaw Bears
The Bears are coming into match with a record of 14-7 (10-1 CIAA) and sit one spot ahead of the Trojans and one match out of first place in in the Northern Division standings. On the offensive side, they are led by Noelani Beard who has a team-high 182 kills which ranks her sixth in the CIAA. Breelyn Clark leads the team in assists with 493 averaging 9.67 per set. Mallory Brown leads the team with 30 service aces which ties her for third in the CIAA. Defensively, Kaylin Evans leads the team with a team-high 144 digs while Cheyenne Hodges leads the team in blocks with 38. As a team, the Bears ranks first in the CIAA in hitting percentage with a .253 percentage and fourth in service aces with 156. They also lead in assists per set (11.18), (12.13) and service aces (2.84).

The Trojans are set to take off to Lynchburg, VA the next day as they play part in a Tri-match against the University of Lynchburg and Virginia University of Lynchburg on Saturday, October 22 with the first match at 1:00 p.m. and the second match at 3:00 p.m.
