VSU Football Nearly Completes Comeback Against Chowan, Falls 43-40 After Go-Ahead Touchdown Late in Fourth Quarter

Trojans earned their first lead of the game with :50 left in the game but allow a Chowan go-ahead touchdown with :20 left.

MURFREESBORO, NC – After outscoring Chowan 28-15 in the second half, the Hawks were able to steal one late in the fourth quarter 43-40. As the Trojans took their first lead of the game with :48 left to go, the Hawks completed a 51-yard pass to set them up for a touchdown that was scored with just :20 to go in the contest.

Inside the Box Score
  • Jordan Davis threw for a career-high 301 yards after completing a career-high 24-of-37 (65%) of his passes with a pair of touchdowns through the air.
  • For the third straight game, Tyrone Fisher earned double-digit tackles as he ended his night with 10 tackles (five solo) along with a half of a tackle-for-loss.
  • Roy Jackson, III led the receiving core with 73 yards on just three catches along which included a 47-yard catch and run into the end zone. Tylique Ray added six grabs for 66 yards while Malik Hunter earned a career-high five catches for 54 yards in the loss.
  • Willie Drew caught his fifth interception of the season while accounting for five tackles (three solo) with a pass breakup. Jaiden Harris also caught his first career interception.
  • All three members of the three-headed monster each scored a touchdown today. Darius Hagans led the rushing attack with 17 carries for 64 yards and a touchdown while adding a pair of catches for 35 yards. Upton Bailey earned 41 yards on nine carries with a touchdown. Kimo Clarke gained 22 yards on 10 carries while leading the backfield with two rushing scored on the day.
  • Miqueal Pillow - Smiley led the Trojans with four tackles-for-loss and 1.5 sacks. He ended with five tackles (three solo).
  • The Trojans help the Hawks to 2-of-8 on third down and earned five sacks in the contest.
  • VSU won the first down battle 23-20 and threw for a season-high 301 yards in the contest.
     
    FIRST HALF
  • The Hawks were able to strike first on their opening drive scoring on a 17-yard run up the middle to take a 7-0 with 11:01 left to go in the first quarter.
  • Following a three-and-out by the Trojans, the Hawks blocked a punt and took it 11 yards to the endzone for touchdown to go up by 14-0 with 2:07 left to go in the first quarter.
  • After Jordan Davis connected with Jaylon Dean for 19 yards then 18 yards to Malik Hunter, it gave a first and goal opportunity on their one yard line. On fourth and one, Kimo Clarke plunged up the middle for a one-yard touchdown run to make the score 14-6 with 12:57 left to go in the second quarter.
  • The Hawks answered with a seven-yard rush to the endzone to extend their lead to 21-6 with 10:07 in the first quarter.  
  • The Trojans capped a 10-play, 50-yard drive with a two-yard rush up the middle to make the score 21-12 with 6:30 left in the second quarter.
  • The Hawks scored late in the second half on a nine-yard rush around the right side to make the score 28-12 with :53 left to go in the second quarter.  
 
  • Chowan took a lead 28-12 into halftime.

SECOND HALF
  • After Darius Hagans and Jordan Davis connected on a 25-yard pass, Hagans scored on a 20-yard rush up the middle to make the score 28-19.
  • 14 plays into their drive, the Trojans ended it with a fumble on the 13 yard line of the Hawks.
  • Luckily for the Trojans, the Hawks gave the ball right back to them. VSU took over on the 11 yard line of Chowan
  • On fourth and goal from the two yard line, Kimo Clarke scored his second touchdown of the day on a two-yard run to make the score 28-26 with 5:37 left to go in the third quarter.
  • Chowan would go on to build on their lead with a 11-yard rush up the middle to make the score 35-26 with 5:21 left in the fourth quarter.
  • On the ensuing drive, Jordan Davis and Roy Jackson, III connected on a 47-yard pass to shorten the lead to just 35-33 with 3:35 left in the fourth quarter.
  • Just two plays into the following drive, Willie Drew earned his fifth interception of the season with 2:42 left to go in the fourth quarter.
  • The Trojans would capitalize on the turnover as Upton Bailey scored on a screen pass with Bruno Onwuazor leading the way for him. The Trojans took their first lead of the game 40-35 with :52 left to go in the contest.
  • Chowan connected on a deep pass down the left sideline for 51 yards to set them up on the seven-yard line. The Hawks would go on to score on a one-yard touchdown and converted on the two-point conversion to take the lead back 43-40 with :23 left in the contest.
  • The Trojans hail mary attempt was unsuccessful which allowed Chowan to sneak away with the win 43-40
