Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Freshman Led Trojans Unable to Shut Door on Shaw, Fall 63-60

ETTRICK, VA – Virginia State men's basketball team dropped their second game in a row to Shaw in heartbreaking fashion late Wednesday evening, 63-60. The Trojans had just two veterans and five freshman on the court as they allowed the Bears to sneak out of the Multipurpose center with a win.  The loss drops the Trojans conference record down to 2-5 on the season.

For the third time this season, Michael Melvin earned nine dimes on the evening, as he was noticeably more aggressive in the game as he set new personal-bests in: shot attempts (16), made three-pointers (4), three-point attempts (7) and rebounds (7). Terrence Hunter-Whitfield finished with 13 points and five rebounds while going 4-of-4 from the foul line. For the first time in his college career, Kylon Lewis scored double-digits as the freshman finished with 13 points and three assists while shooting 2-of-4 from beyond the arc and 5-of-9 from the field. Daryl Mackey, Jr. also posted his first career double-digit game scoring 10 points on 2-of-4 shooting from three-point range and 4-of-8 from the field. Mackey, Jr. also added two steals that came in back-to-back possessions. Caleb Butts shot an efficient 4-of-6 from the field, which led to eight points along with five boards. The Trojans held the Bears to just 38% shooting from the field and from the three-point line. That being said, the Bears scored 26 points in the paint as the Trojans had trouble defending the inside.
