ETTRICK, VA  (September 15, 2021) – Virginia State University Volleyball fought hard Wednesday afternoon, falling to Christopher Newport University in three sets (28-26, 25-21, 25-12) at the Freeman center.

First Set
The Captains quickly got out to a big lead in the first set, 6-1. Virginia State was able to make it close as freshman 
Helena Eubanks came up with two big kills to make the score 12-12 prior to a CNU timeout. Junior 
Kiara Hill came up with a kill to bring the score 25-24 before CNU was able to edge the Trojans in set one 28-26.
Second Set
VSU led for a short period in the middle of the second set thanks to kills from Junior 
Gabrielle Bradley, Eubanks and Hill. CNU was able to bring the score to 18-18 late in the second set. The Captains would get a little breathing room as they were able to push the score out to 21-18 before finishing off the set, 25-21.
Third Set
CNU was able to earn the biggest point margin of the match as they rolled out a 17-5 lead late in the third set. The Trojans tried to find momentum as Hill and Redshirt Junior MaKenzie Johnson earned back-to-back points to make the score, 18-7. The Captains would hold on to their lead and take the third set, 25-12. 
 
Inside the Box Score
	- Freshman Najlaa Williams accounted for a team high in aces (3) and digs (8). 
- The Trojans were able to accumulate more blocks than CNU, 8-4, in the Wednesday afternoon contest.
- Sophomore Emma Quarles assisted on 13 of the Trojans points. 
Next Up
The Trojans will be on the road to Wilmington, Delaware this weekend to compete in the Wildcat Regional Invitational. VSU will face Adelphi University Saturday, September 18 at 2:30 p.m. before facing the hosts, Wilmington University at 6:00 p.m.
