Ettrick, V.A. (April 18, 2021) - Virginia State head football coach Reggie Barlow and the Trojans will welcome seven student - athletes to the team to compete in the 2021 season. 
 
The seven players joining the team are Kelly Loiseau, Malik Thompson, Taleek McCoy , Kendell Sampson Jr., Maurice Mayhane - Burks, Dajon Evans and Devin Bailey. VSU's class consists of a couple local guys from the 804 and one from the 757, one from Florida, one from North Carolina, one from Louisiana and one from Alabama. 
 
The Trojans add depth and talent across the field with five athletes joining the offensive side of the ball and two on the defensive side. VSU will add two running backs, a quarterback, and two offensive lineman while the defense will add a defensive Lineman and a cornerback.

Kelly Loiseau

*His quickness and strength allow him to be a productive run and pass defender. He is instinctive, taking great angles on either side of the ball. He's a physical player that could also be an excellent nickel cornerback with a solid floor as a ball carrier, too.

• Held offers such as Florida, LSU and Florida Atlantic.
• Three star recruits according the 247 sports.

 
 

Kendell Sampson Jr.
Quarterback * 6-0 * 175
New Orleans, LA. * St. Augustine High School
*Has a very live arm and makes plays on the run outside the pocket. He also poses a threat in the run game as he has the ability to make defenders miss in the open field.

•             Acquired 2,271 Total Yards and 23 TD's as a senior ;accounted for four total touchdowns against Holy Cross.
•             Averaged 253.6 passing yards per game.


 
 
Malik Thompson

Harrisburg, NC * Hickory Ridge High School
*             Gets a great jump on the snap count and very strong upon contact. Will be a force to be reckoned with in  the run game. 

•             Accounted for 15 tackles in four games as a junior.
•             Held offers from Fayetteville State, Livingston and Elizabeth City State.
 


 
Tyleek McCoy
Offensive Line* 6-4 * 295
Midlothian, VA * Manchester High School
* He plays with aggression and finishes his blocks. He moves well for his size and is able to block in space as well. Does a great job of getting hands inside and running his feet, which will make him an asset in the run game. Fiery competitor that can bring more passion to the Offensive Line.

• Received offers from Fairmont State, UVA – Wise and Chowan.
• First Team All – Region.
• Caught a one – handed interception.

 

 

Maurice Mayhane – Burks

Huntsville, Ala * Grissom High School
* Does an exceptional job passing blocking and shows high football IQ as he's able to sort through blitzes and block the right guy. Has great ability to be a pulling guard or tackle as well.

• Held offers from Lane College and Anderson Broaddus.
• Has extreme athleticism to dunk at his size.

 
 

Da'Jon Evans

*He has potential to be an offensive weapon for the team as he is explosive in the return game and as a running back.

Devin Bailey

*He has versatility to effect the game from the cornerback or safety postilion. He has a rare combination of physicality mixed with the ability to track the ball and make tough catches. 

•             He earned Special Teams Player of the Game against Varina High School in 2019 after returning an interception for a touchdown.
•             He earned Defensive Player of the Game against Prince George High School in 2019 after returning a blocked field goal for a touchdown.
