WILSON, NC (March 9, 2021)- The Trojans took a quick lead at the top of the second inning with a double into center off the bat of Freshman Emmett Jefferson for his first hit of the season. The hit brought Tayvon Dawson in to score. One pitch later, Chase Moore found room in right field for a single to bring Jefferson home to make the score 2-0. An inning later, Virginia State added to their lead thanks to back-to-back singles from Dawson and Jefferson to make the score 4-0. The bottom of the third inning is when the Barton College started finding gaps in the VSU defense due to RBI singles from Travious Ford, Bradley McLean and Colby Warren. Later that inning, Peyton Creech hit one far enough to allow the runner on third to tag up to plate to put the Bulldogs on top 5 to 4 headed into the top of the fourth inning.
After scoring a run in the bottom of the fourth, the Bulldogs started getting loose as they scored 10 runs in seven hits at the bottom of the fifth inning to make the score 16-4.The runs were provided by three extra base hits from Ford, Warren and Creech . A big fly via Dylan Scaranda scored three runs in that same inning while Zach Taylor brought the final run in for the inning thanks to a single into left field.
After two scoreless innings,
Kevin Russell doubled into right field to bring
Carl Granderson in to score. A pitch later, Christian Henderson brought Russell around from second base to score to make the score 18-6.
At the bottom of the eighth inning, Barton College was able to add seven runs to their lead to make the final score 25-6.
Virginia State Pitcher,
Nicholas Woolfolk took the loss today after pitching 4 innings and giving up eight hits. The Trojans saw five pitchers on the mound while they were only able to muster together two strikeouts in the contest. Shawn Harrison of Barton College took home his first win of the season.
