Box Score ETTRICK, VA – The Virginia State University women's basketball team has now won four of their five games in the month of December after beating the Broncos 60-55 in an evening matchup on Saturday. The Trojans are now above .500 for the first time in the season, as they stand tall at 6-5 after winning the last two games.
Kaaliya Williams lead the Trojans with 17 points on an efficient 7-of-10 shooting from the field.
J'Auana Robinson scored a personal best 13 points off the bench while going unconscious from beyond the arc making 4-of-4 of her three's along with a steal.
Sommer Blakemore finished with 13 on the evening along with four rebounds, six assists and two steals.
Natalia Leaks ended with eight points, a team-high eight rebounds and six assists while
Valerie Samuel accumulated six assists and three steals as well. The Trojans forced 20 turnovers on the afternoon, as they were able to turn them into 16 points. Yet again, the VSU bench outscored the opponents bench 17-8. The VSU guards were serving up dimes all game as the team amassed 19 assists in the contest. The Trojans shot better from three than they did from the field as the squad went 50% from three-point range and 42% from the field.
How It Happened
- After Kaaliya Williams scored the first six points for the Trojans, the home team held a slim 9-7 lead over the Broncos half way through the first quarter.
- After a back-and-fourth affair, the Trojans scored five points unanswered to take a 17-12 to conclude the first quarter.
- Halfway through the second quarter, Trojans scored the only to buckets in the half as the squad held a 23-12 lead with 4:06 left in the second quarter.
- A 6-2 VSU run would allow the Trojans to take a 31-16 lead into the locker room at half time.
- Kaaliya Williams led the game with 11 points in the first half behind 5-of-7 shooting. J'Auana Robinson hit 2-of-2 three-pointers while Natalia Leaks had six points with five rebounds and five assists in the first half. The Trojans went 44% from the field in the first half while knocking down 3-of-6 of their three's. The VSU defense held the Broncos to 30% from the field while forcing 13 turnovers. The Trojans were also able to outrebound FSU 19-15.
- The Broncos wasted no time coming out of the half time break going on a 9-2 run to bring the score to 36-27 with 6:09 left in the third quarter.
- While the Trojans were able to take the lead heading into the final quarter, the Broncos went on a scoring spree, as they were able to cut the lead down to just 47-40.
- Much like the start of the third quarter, the Broncos came out hot going on a 9-2 to run to bring it to a one score ballgame at 51-49.
- FSU would make one more push to the lead bringing the score to 57-55 yet, the Trojans were able close it out 60-55.
