The VSU women's basketball team looks to go 2-0 against CIAA teams this season as they gain momentum scoring a season-high 85-52 against Wilmington (Del.). Coach James Hill Jr.'s squad is currently tied for 10th in the nation in steals (130), 3rd in forced turnovers (256) and 28th in points allowed per game (55). The Trojans lead the conference in turnover margin (8.22) and assist/turnover ratio (0.89). The squad also leads the conference in free throw percentage (72%) as well. With four on the season,
Kaaliya Williams is ranked nationally in double-doubles at 22th and leads the conference in rebounds (86) and occupies the second spot in free throw percentage (85%).
Valerie Samuel is now third in the conference in assists (28) and holds the fourth spot in assist/turnover ratio (1.1). Samuel also ranks third in the conference in free throw percentage hitting 70% of her free throws.
Natalia Leaks currently first in the conference in field goal percentage (45%), third in points scored per contest (14.7) and fourth in assists per contest with 3.4.
Last Time Out
- Natalia Leaks stuffed the stat sheet as she came close to a triple-double with a game-high 20 points, nine rebounds and seven steals along with six assists. Leaks went 100% from the free throw line in three games this year as she went 4-of-4 from the foul line last night.
- Sommer Blakemore earned a season-high six steals along with 16 points. Blakemore also tied her season-high in assists with seven.
- Shayla Sweeney led the bench mob with a season-high 13 points along with five rebounds and a steal.
- The Trojans attained 18 steals and scored 37 points off turnovers.
- For the sixth time this season the Trojans forced 30+ turnovers as VSU forced 31 Wildcat turnovers in last night's matchup.
Scouting the Broncos
While the Broncos are.500 on the season, our CIAA foe enters the match up after winning two games in a row by more than 20 points. FSU is 1-2 road games this season with a 1-1 record against CIAA opponents. On the offensive end, the Broncos rank within the top-three in points per game (72), points allowed per game (56) and point margin (16). FSU is also second in the conference in field goal percentage (41%) and offensive rebounds (417). The Broncos scored a season-high 90 points against Morris with the help of 31 steals. Defensively, VSU grabs 46 boards per game while allowing just a 34 % field goal percentage and giving up 59 points per game, which ranks them second in the conference. The Broncos are currently the conference leaders in steals averaging 15 per game and blocks per game averaging four. Fayetteville State is the home of the conference leader in points as Aniylah Bryant leads the CIAA with 18 points per game. Bryant also leads the conference in steals (33) and is second behind Natalia Leaks in field goal percentage at 44%. The Broncos has yet another player at the top of the conference as London Thompson is first in the CIAA in rebounds per game with 9.3 and assists with 34. Thompson also ranks third in assist/turnover ratio with a 1.3. On the defensive end, Mikaela Jones is second in the conference in blocked shots with 11.
