Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

VSU trumps VUL 56-35

ETTRICK, VA – The Virginia State University women's basketball has won two of their last three games after putting a whipping on Virginia University of Lynchburg 56-35 Tuesday evening.
 


Kaaliya Williams recorded her third double-double of the season with 20 points, a career-high 15 rebounds and three steals on the day. Williams did her offensive work on 7-of-15 shooting from the field and 6-of-6 from the free throw line. Valerie Samuel added a season-high 11 rebounds along with a game-high six assists and four points. The Trojans shot a season-high 87% from the free throw line while forcing 32 VUL turnovers in the contest. Virginia State allowed only a 22% shot percentage from VUL while forcing 14 steals.  
 

How It Happened
  • Through the first ten minutes of the game, VSU held a 17-7 lead after an 11-1 run. Kaaliya Williams had nearly as many points as VUL with six.

  • The Trojans opened the second quarter with an 8-2 run to bring the score to 25-9. At the half, the Trojans led 28-13.

     
 
  • After 20 minutes of play, Kaaliyah Williams scored eight points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Valerie Samuel had four points along with six rebounds while Kamryn Anthony had five points. The Trojans held VUL to a 22% field goal percentage while accounting for seven steals.

 
 
  • In the third quarter, the Trojans extended their lead out to 21 points at 44-23. Williams totaled eight points in the quarter.
 
 
  • The Dragons would open the fourth quarter with a 7-0 run which proved to be a threat to get themselves back in the game with now at 44-30. Despite the brief run, the Trojans were able to win by a score of 56-35.

  • The Trojans amassed 14 steals and were able to turn them into 23 points
